The trip to dv went well. After arrival, the 74 service truck ate a rod bearing. John vogelsang sent parts out via a club member. Robert kennett puled the pan and rod caps on #s 7 and 8. # 7 bearing gone, # 8 scored. He polished the crank throw with a pocket whetstone then pared down a .010 under bearing insert with a sheath knife and put the whole thing bakc together. It ran!
However, when we loaded the Scout onto the trailer and drove it a bit, a slight knock returned so we aborted that mission.
Bill boitano from Colorado unloaded his big blue Scout and we loaded the 74 onto his trailer behind his dodge diesel. Colonel roland drove that. My trailer was hooked up to bill's Scout. Bill drove that. I followed in my Scout. Wade and sue jackson playedtail end charlie in their Jeep. The entire convoy drove to bakersfield through the snow over tehachapi to bakersfield [cold in an open Scout! Parts of my nether anatomy have yet to thaw] Where we left the 74 and trailer at Matt woodfin's house. Then we all went our various ways.
I can't recommend driving an open Scout 80 through rain, snow, cold and interstate traffic... But we got home and got the colonel on his flight home to kentucky.
Weather was windy, calm and warm, rainey, some snow. Bo major breakdowns except my 74.
Folks came from oregon, kentucky, Arizona, Missouri, and hither and yon all over California. Our hq at panamint springs worked well. Gas was $5.48. Food was acceptable if pricey. Campground was well maintained.
A great many folks who expressed intention to join us couldn't make it. Others arrived unexpectedly.
The trials were fun. The company was good. Thank you bill lawrence for your guidance.
