Dana 20 VS D300 ?

I have a IH 304 rebuilt engine that I am looking to mount up with a 4 speed manual tranny. The question that I have is what is the difference between the Dana 20 and d300 transfer cases? Will both of them bolt in the same? Do they need two different tranny's? Thanks walt

The Dana 20 was used on most Scout iis until 1979. In 1980 they went to the 300. The 300 has a 2.62 low compaired to the 20s 2:1. Because the 20 was used on more scouts they are easier and cheaper to come by. As far as the bull gear, you will need one to match the transfer case you use. And for a manual trans. I am quessing that you are using a Scout tranny?

We get this question a lot. There is probably no significant strength advantage to the 300. It does feature a lower range gearset than the 20. However, the Dana 20 is typically shorter, allowing for better driveshaft angles. Additionally, transmission interface differences make the upgrade challenging, unless a later, 300 compatible transmission is also swapped in. This, however, is not desirable as these later transmissions were usually weaker than the previous versions available with the 20. "

Just a correction, the Dana 300 has a 2.62:1 ratio, the Dana(spicer) 18 has a 2.46:1 ratio and the Dana 20 has a 2.00:1 ratio. This is all Scout info as I believe Bronco Dana 20's had a 2.46:1 ratio in them....and no the Bronco case will not bolt up :d.

My Dana 20 liked to jump out of 4-low going up long steep hills....... Does the 300 do this also ?

A d20 "jumps" out of 4l because it's shift detent springs have compressed and no longer provide the proper detent engagement. This is common on any high mileage d20 that has not been reconditioned over time.

This issue is not the fault of the transfer case, it simply needs a rebuild with the correct fresh parts.

Yes, after the rebuild it hasn’t jumped out. The shifter still moves back some and I hold it out of habit, but it hasn’t come out yet.....
