Dana 20 vent

I'm rebuilding a transfer case for my son's Scout and I thought I would get clever and put an npt to barb fitting in and run a hose up to the firewall so as to prevent water entering the case. Looks like a 1/4" npt will fit. Btw, I think that I am stuck doing something like this as the stock vent looks to be press fit in and I don't think that I can restore it.

Any opinions?

Harrywt; I just did the same vent system on my 74 sii Dana 20. The old vent on mine was threaded in and I believe it was 3/4 or 13/16. The wrench didn't fit quite right but it worked fine. I also did the 727 and tail shaft. If I remember right the barbed fitting was 1/4 npt. Danny
