D30 vs. D27 Interchange of Parts

I'm thinking about rebuilding the d30 front I have sitting in my garage and was wondering what you guys could tell me about parts for that as compared to the d27 I have already under my s80. I believe I can use all the brake parts and the spindle from my d27. Is that right? How about the kingpin bearings/cones and inner axle bushing? Felt seals?

I know where to buy d27 stuff, but I haven't found any sources for d30 closed knuckle.

Just eying these things up, they all look the same. It makes me wonder what the heck is different. Is it just the tube diameter and r&p? Thanks for the help.

I don't know mush about inner parts for the 30 but the
knuckle seals are the same
the bearing seals are readily available
the bearings unless wasted can be cleaned and reused.
Just about all I can tell you.

I don't think you will have problems with the stock 27 unless you beat it up. You seem to be some what conservative and the 4 banger can only push so hard.

I just realized I have a lot of slop in the diff on my d27. Stupid I didn't check it when it was apart. I can turn the drive shaft almost 90 degrees before it catches, so I'm thinking either r&p trouble or probably just worn spiders. The d30 I have seems to be in good shape as far as that goes. The knuckles are not bad but do have a tiny bit of wiggle up down (and no resistance to turning at all with the seals off). I haven't cleaned up the bearings yet to see if they are okay. Maybe the last guy didn't shim it properly. Just bearings on this one, no "cones".

Anyway, I'm just making a project of it. It's not urgent. I could just replace the spiders on the d27, but I think that requires removing the tie rod to get the carrier out, which is just about the worst part of a full axle swap anyway...

That is a bunch of slop. Are you sure the hubs were locked?
I'll see what mine has later after the garage warms up.
