D30 / D44 & axles / brakes

I looked for a thread regarding this, but didnt see anything I found to match up as well as I'd have liked, so here goes.

What I have is a '71 800B with a d30 in front. The rig is spring over (I just received new spring plates and u-bolts from IH only thanks Jeff!) and I have a few things im trying to iron out.

One; since it stops like a fat lady going down a oiled up lane at a bowling alley, I need to address the brakes. The po said they had new wheel cylinders, but since its been sitting, one front has been seeping out fluid. So, in the least, I can replace those, but im not driving the rig this winter, except maybe around the block. I found a guy selling a furd breako d30 with the Chevy disc conversion on it. Im curious to know if that brake conversion would work on my IH d30? I couldnt find any info on that. Id much rather have disc than drum for obvious reasons.

Two; I want to eventually swap to a d44. I have a line on a Scout II d44 thats already been cut and turned for a spring over, its just the tubes and housing, so was thinking of getting that, then another d44 and building one from the two, replacing the wear items of course.

Then tying the disc conversion into this, ive seen these front brake conversions (somewhere, cant recall at the moment) where a d30 brake kit will swap over to a d44. Any idea if this can be done?

If'n ya'll need more info, I can attempt to dig some up. Like everyone else and their brothers under the sun, im trying to build an inexpensive, reliable but capable rig. I know, I want my cake and to eat it too :winky:

let me know what ya'll think. Thanks guys!!! Have a great turkey day! :gringrin:

Is your d30 the original Scout 800 closed knuckle version or is it out of a Scout II that has open knuckle?

From doing a little more research it seems the broncos had a "kingpin" d30 front, and im assuming that equates to being an open knuckle? :icon_eh:
damn, been looking, cant find anything cast in stone...

So how feasible is it to do this?;

im thinking of picking up a front d44 from a Scout II. It is just the center, section and axle tubes, but it has been cut and turned for use with a spring over. My rig is currently a so with a d30 up front. Is it feasible to get this d44 thats empty, then acquire another one thats full with axles and disc brakes, and swap all the stuff over to the so prepared axle? Let me know if there are any reasons this would not work. Thanks!

Closed knuckle axles use "king pins", all open knuckle 30's and 44's use "ball joints".

What you want to do should work just fine. When swapping the GM brakes from the d30 to the d44 you will need to buy new stubshafts as the ujoint size is different. We stock GM stub shafts in both standard and 4340.
