D20 4Lo Slip to N Downhill Only

My transfer case slips out of 4lo into n when going downhill. Sometimes it does it on the flat at a coast. Uphill with power going, even lightly, not a problem. Downhill engine braking and pedal braking you can hear it groaning and feel it starting to push back on the stick and then slip, right into n.

Wondering if anyone else has run into this and/or knows a solution.

Thanks

That’s odd, mine would do it going up hill, in 4lo and out of 4hi going down hill opposite of what yours is doing.

Sorry I am no help, only thing that got mine to quit was a rebuild...

Starting to read up on that work and am I right in that the springs can be replaced without dropping or rebuilding the case?

I don't think you're that lucky. On a d300 you'd need to remove the shift rails, and you can't do that without loosening the screws on the forks. At the very least you'd need to remove the inspection cover, and I don't think you can see the set screws until you've removed a bunch of other stuff.

Under disassembly the spring and ball are the first items removed. Which, if not touching anything else you ought to be able to just stick them back in.

Right you are!

I should have read the link I sent you more carefully. On the d300 the springs and balls drop in from above. The shift rails have to come out first.

You could shim under the spring to provide more tension, but novak will sell you the right springs. I used their rebuild kit for my d300 and have no complaints.
