Ok getting ready to install this dui on my 74 sii. Timing Mark is sitting between 5 and tdc. Valve springs extended but not loose at all. Rotor sitting at #8 on the old cap. Am I in the ballpark? I am as bad as it gets at getting these 180 out.
Also, do I get the reluctor air gap prior to stabbing dist. I'm not familiar with this.

Sounds like you are in the correct place.

If you want to make absolute sure, use your finger in plug hole #8 and by hand (1/2" drive ratchet on the balancer bolt) turn the engine in it's normal direction till you feel it blow pressure on/around your finger. That is for sure the correct tdc to stab your dui.

The reluctor air gap should have been verified and corrected when davis modified that distributor for use with an ihc-produced engine and no further attention is needed unless it's totally disassembled in the future for some reason.

Thanks Robert. Yeah I did that as well. I think I'm on the right side of the tracks on this one. If not you all will hear me scream from oklahoma.

Wrong plug wires confirmed. Not the fault of p.d.'s at all.
Stabbed my dui thinking I would rotate ccw to time. Ran out of room quick.
I have never been very good at plugging the hole to find tdc (team roper hands I guess)
dropped $70 on a comp. Gauge and a long screw driver.
Will this in conjunction with my timing Mark get me back to tdc without pulling my valve cover again?

Dude!
Be carefull w/the screwdriver!!!
I was trying to find tdc comp. When I should have just called it quits and gone home for the night.
As I turned the motor over by hand, I figured I would watch the screwdrive rise and when it stopped, I was close.
I saw the screwdriver get "pushed out of the cylinder but it actually got snapped by the piston and the tip was left inside the cylinder!!!!!
I freaked and started to look into taking the f-in head off. Instead I was lucky enough to use my magnet stick and retrieve it. I matched it up w/the other half and it matched perfectly w/no missing pieces.....
Take the cover off, 6 little bolts w/a 1/2" socket and your good to go!
