D-44,3.54 replace?

I've gota '78 s 11,just found out I have a bad axle gear.it's a trac-lock diff.then I found a very thin shim coming out between the housing & shim pack( on the opposite side of the bad axle gear) beside the bearing of the diff. Can I just pull the diff, out,change the axle gear & the shim without getting into a bunch of trouble? My 1st rear end job.and w/out re-setting up the gears?thx- here's the new/used gear I was gona put in it. 1st pic is a piece of the shim.Jeff

If that shim is part of the pre-load of the trac-loc diff then once the shims (and spider gears) are replaced, ya might need to recheck the gear teeth pattern between the pinion and ring gear. Might even check it before you take the diff out of the housing, as a reference.

If you are just replacing the spider gears - the old ones in your photos are whooped, I have heard of people of just replacing them and nothing else and re-installed and ran with it with no issues at all. But I would check the teeth pattern anyways
