Cutting up IH part

Would it be bad of me to cut up a stock air cleaner housing to allow me to keep my expensive air filter fitting at correct height while allowing me some clearance between my hei type distributor and filter housing? I had such a hard time finding a 10" filter housing for a 4-7/32" carb top that sat down around the carb like the stock housing does.

I don't see an issue with what ya propose. I know that air cleaner bases for those carbs are difficult to find.

I'm assuming ya just mean fabbing a relief or pocket into the housing itself and the filter element will remain in current position?

Many air cleaner bases and lids were done that way oem, to provide clearance for other engine-mounted items.

Can ya post a pic with some sharpie markings outlining what you are proposing? Darren at ihon is the king of "pockets and reliefs"!!

Well I was considering cutting everything under and outside the blue tape away leaving my oiled gauze filter exposed all the way around. I wouldn't be doing this to my original box just the one in the pic I got off ebay. I also thought about making pockets/recesses to allow clearance for the outlet neck but that doesn't really open it up for the wires. Anyways I am open to suggestions.

The problem I am having is finding a 10" housing with the 4 7/32" neck while maintaining the low profile. If I cut this old box up it would be open for my existing k&n. So I guess another problem is not wanting to have to buy another filter. Shoot, if I had a bead roller and a sheer I would just fab one up. Local worthless parts store has one in their catalog but none at any stores or warehouses. Says proform brand. while we find your parts, please enter your zip code at partsamerica.com Probably would not fit but could be easily returned.

You might try summit??? Just a suggestion not sure if they would have anything or not. The only reason I am against it is that once these type of things are gone, they are gone. Either way it's your part chop away if need be.

Chad,
I feel the same way about the oe stuff. I have been looking for a housing for a while now with out any luck. Sounds like a niche market. Not only do I not want to cut it up, I don't even want to change it at all. Maybe someone out there would know where to get a 10" open housing low profile with a hole for 4 7/32" carb flange. I have looked online as well as at local shops without any luck. I could possibly put on this other carb (350jets) that May have a bigger flange but then I wouldn't be running my stock setup with the auto choke. Maybe I will check my rv and see what size that base flange is and maybe find a housing for that and cut it up. It is a '77 dodge 360 w/2bbl.

I am using a 4bbl IH air cleaner in my 345 and also have a dui distributor. Give one of those a try, I have no clearance issues. Oh yea, im also using a holly 2300 economaster carb.

Here's a pic.

Thanks for the input lon and happy birthday. I am now thinking about rebuilding and putting on a carb I used to have on before I rebuilt my 2210. It is a 7448 (2300 series?) and I believe the flange is located a little differently as well as being the larger and more common size. Thanks again
