Cooling a 304 in a 68 Travelall

Good morning folks, so I'm almost done putting this family sled back together and I'm about to a new fan for the radiator and I've been trying to find a fan clutch to slap on it this 304 engine as well. Seems like anything offered starts at 69 as far as Travelalls are concerned and it's obviously because of clearance issues between the fan and radiator. So my question is this... Has anyone tried the Hayden low profile fan clutch? .... I hope I've posted this question in the right area so I don't frustrate any moderators here.... ok ... That's all I got

So everything I'm seeing as far as fan clutch go, they start running them on 1969 and newer... Now my question is, has anyone tried installing the Hayden low profile fan clutch on a older 304?

Should work, running the older style on my 74 Scout and it fits the same as the OEM big nut one that was factory installed. Make sure you get the matching fan. A 6 blade should be fine for a 304.

i dont know about a travellall but in my scout II i use the low profile clutch. its a better fit toward the radiator but a very tight fit toward the water pump. do you have an A/C ? my A/C belt vibrates alot and now and then it will nick the fan. for me im just going to live with it and try to figure out a way to shield the belt or get the belt to stop vibrating, if it chews my A/C belt one day so be it.

as for cooling it cools better then the standard clutch for me. it spins the fan faster and the placement in the fan shroud seems better. i do a alot of 4 wheeling alot of 1st gear at 1,200 RPM that's why i switched clutches.

Thank you for your input... I had found a clutch out at the yard where my father in law stores about 10 or so different internationals. I brought it home and dry fitted the radiator with it, had maybe an 1/8" clearance.... So that was a hard "no"... Then I found this low profile fan clutch and it only stands off 2.7" off the water pump. That'll give me over an 1" of clearance. At this time I'm not installing the A/C . But I'll keep your findings in mind when I do. What aftermarket fan are you running?... Thank you again for your time and help ๐Ÿค™

Well, honestly no I haven't... Reason being is I see the yr starting at 1969 for those fan clutches. I figured that was impart because of the distance between the radiator and the water pump was increased starting in 69'. The 68' with the 304 is a pretty tight fit when trying to add a fan clutch (about an 1/8" clearance) The Hayden low profile clutch seems like it'll allow for more clearance with only standing at 2.7" tall. If you fellas carried that clutch, you could bet I'd purchase it from you, but it seems I'll have to roll over to Summit in Reno and pick one up with a new 17" 6 blade fan.... Unless you carry the new fan... I'll take a gander now๐Ÿ‘

So my son and I drove to Reno to Summit Racing this morning and picked up the Hayden low profile fan clutch... On the way home I got a message saying UPS had dropped off something from IHPA and pow!!! They slipped right into each other perfectly. I put on some blue goo with washers and lock washers and dry fitted it and I have around an 1" of clearance from fan to radiator. So now the next truck to pull out of my hat is putting the fan shroud back on with the new set up...... I'm thinking I'd probably better lay some cardboard against the radiator so as not to f it up.... Slowly but surely ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™
