Does the size of the overflow tank need to stay the same? I was thinking about getting a 24oz overflow tank from summit and relocating the tank to open up that area.
The tank size can change but 24oz is very small for a v8. If you consider the reserve water being 1/2 the tank volume that only leaves 12oz for expansion. Just the heating of the water will use more than that. I would say 1/2 gallon (64oz) container for a Scout with a v8. You want to be able to retain the coolant in the event you have a mild temperature rise issue like slow crawling over rough roads and not puke overboard.
can you tell us the size and source of the overflow tank you used on ld's custom Scout project.picture 0589 on pg 5 of the build. I also would like to relocate my stock overflow tank.
I personally removed the "drain" and just plugged it. You could leave it and just run it closed, but it added over an inch of height to it and I have a confined space. I actually had a larger one with a site level built in, however that one was too big to fit in my application.
It's black and blends in but here is my location next to the yellow top behind the tranny cooler.
The fitting on top has a tube that goes all the way to the bottom of the canister. This way it can suck coolant back in. The canister has a vent hole on the top for when it fills up. The drain valve is to allow simple draining of the canister.
