Comp Cams 268H - Too Much For 345?

Is a comp cams 268h cam too much for a 345 with a 4 barrel intake? Got a deal on a motor to rebuild that had a 268 still in the box and I've been told that it's for higher rpm applications and would require additional head work in order to make it mate well with my 345. If this is true, I'll just sell the cam.

Your opinion?

Thanks

What do you plan to use this engine for? I've got about 5k miles on a similar build with a comp 252. It's a bit lumpy at cold idle and comes on nice at higher rpm's, even though it's advertized as the high torque bottom end cam.

Mostly running errands haha. Seriously, trips around town and occasional trail riding. Nothing hard core by any stretch of the imagination. I got such a great price on the cam and engine that I thought it would be nice to have, but don't want to make it unreliable or troublesome.

Having driven 2 different stock 345's in my Scout and now with the warmed over one, I can say that when towing the extra hp is nice for pulling hills, but the stock engines did do better at slow trail riding. I used to be able to idle over stuff in 1st gear 4l, now is not quite as good. Mph has improved, the first engine got 11.5, next 12.5 and now I can realistically say I'm getting 14.5 in mixed driving.

So I'd say unless you really enjoy the sound of a lumpy cam go with a stock or 252 cam. Perhaps the kind folks here can arrange a partial credit on something more fitting to your needs.

Do you have a kit or just the cam? If just the cam, iirc you'll need at least a high lift spring set to use that cam.

I just have the cam, so I'd have to buy different lifters from my understanding. I think I'll just sell this 268 and go with the stock one.

Thanks for your advice, much appreciated!
