Appears to me the oem keeper has been removed in the past.

What is retaining the piston is simply corrosion/galling of the outside section of the bore. Press the piston forward with a punch, use emery paper to polish the corrosion off the bore and then remove the piston.

You must keep in mind...these girling master/slave combos are not precision items and are fairly crude in construction. But if assembled using a modern rebuild set, they will use plain old dot 3 fluid and last ok. There is no reason to use the proprietary girling fluid if the cylinders have been rebuilt using common us-supply parts.

Would a greaseable fitting fit in the bleeder hole?if so,then take your grease gun an pump it out.but as Mike said, that's the solution.clean it up good.Jeff

The piston moves freeely, that aluminum ring however stays in place, should I move the piston foward and then try to knock the ring loose?

Yes,you May have to have some help.push the piston in an hold it.then get the snap ring out of it.that'll be fun! Get it to move around in it's groove freely 1st.Jeff,post up a pic!

Follow mm's recommendation to depress the piston and with 320 of finer grit wd paper dress the bore with a finger till clean. Corrosion and or deposits can block the removal.

Also I think I can see a damaged bore edge that no doubt would have rolled a burr into the bore.. See photo.

Im going to leave it alone until I get a backup mc,if I do get it out the snapring in the rebuild kit is never going to hold it in place its the right size for the bore but it is so thin it would never hold the little piston in.the damage is where the pedal shaft rubs.
