Clear Ignition Upgrade

I’m hoping to get clarification on ignition upgrades. I’ve read a ton of posts here and from all the detail and side conversations in them; this is what I’ve come up with. I have a ’74 345 non-gold box Holley distributor.

stocker replacement upgrade
Pertronix ignitor II module in distributor #91481
pertronix flame thrower II black epoxy coil .6 ohm #45111

performance replacement upgrade
Pertronix ignitor iii module in distributor #7ho-181
msd blaster ss e core coil .3 ohm #8207
msd 6al cd box #6425

can someone confirm that is the setup option I/we are looking for?
Thanks

All this depends on a distributor that does not have a worn out shaft, and a functional mechanical and vacuum advance systems. If the distributor is mechanically worn out, then a replacement distributor like a hei or mallory May be in order.

I did an all mallory set up with a unilite dizzy and a mallory digital 6 box with an e-coil. Extremely reliable, no cold start/hot start issues and with any good plan for an ignition system most of the options out there allow you to build up. Do realize that nothing you do is going to turn the truck into a speed demon.

Option 1 is simple and works fine. Just a couple minutes and you ready.

Option 2 will give you more fire, but a plug upgrade to say e3-plugs might be a better bet.

If you want to get a bit more adventurous and do some home work. You can run a stock GM epoxy coil and mopar pickup.
Requires you find an old Ford dissy at the junk yard and pull the plate. This info is in the fuel injection section.
But its a slippery slope to making your rig fuel injected.
I figured I gained about 15 hp, and a couple miles per gallon more.
That was not the main reason for my conversion. I just got tierd of doing the happy dance on the gas pedal to get the Scout to start. The first time I started the Scout while reaching through the window made it worth it.

Call (530)268-0864 and you will get the right parts the first time.

I found these on http://www.IHPartsAmerica.com

Looks like there a couple models, depends on the year of your IH I suspect.

I read up on the Ford distributor thing and don’t plan to go that route.

It’s not a speed demon or hi-po motor so I’m also not really considering a big budget hi-po ignition system. I’m leaning more towards my option one since it would be cheaper and an improvement. But option two is an interesting upgrade as well.

So speaking of ‘worn distributor’, when you’re checking for play are you seeing if it will wiggle side to side or something else? And for advance, doesn’t the pertronix ignitor system kinda fix that?

Bang for your buck on a stock rig go option one. You'll be surprised of the improvement in run quality.

As for distributor looseness. The p-trons are less effected by it but still not the best to have one that has a lot of play.

The worn condition in side to side. Also up and down but don't confuse up and down with the advance mech, moving.

The up and down is best checked with the distributor removed. It is the clearance between the drive gear and the housing end.
