carb Q's on a 258 - 6 with holley

Sick nicks carb is one messed up thing.

What carb came on 73 with the strait 6?
It says Holley on the side, but the eyes are going, and I am having a hard time seeing through the greese to get the numbers.
It is a one barel.
The thing is missing parts, so you can only set one idle, and the auto choke is busted.
What was the original carb, and is it worth while working on a 2 barel replacement?

Thanks,
Mike

The most likely unit is a Holley 1940.

Same "base" unit that was used on the 196 for a few tears in s800 also.

It's a simple matter to clean off the main body with carb spray and record the list number and post here. Then we can tell you more.

As for a substitute carb, a 2v mixer might possibly be installed with a proper adapter. Spend some time searching for amc/Jeep info in that regard.

Have you scrolled through this thread regarding carb I.d.? Ya might be surprised!

Thanks Mike,
it's that 1904, with some stuff knocked off it with a board.
I have a webber 2 brl on a Scout at home. I will give that a try.
What I would like to do is put on a 2300. Wishfull thinking I suppose.

I said..."1940" Holley...a totally different mixer and very "modern" in design.

Yes...a 2300 Holley would be nice onna full built performance motor with cam/headers/porting/compression and dedicated intake manifold. Otherwise...a total waste of resources!

A weber dgv is a very common conversion carb for the rambler/amc motors used in Jeep and IH apps. Good luck on dialing it in. You'll need a box full of parts and a lotta patience (and it would certainly help if ya used an exhaust gas analyzer).

I May have 2 of those carbs laying aroung in da garage. I pulled one off my current motor when I installed the clifford intake and edlbrok 4brl carb. The 2nd came off a spare 258 l6 I picked up from wrecking yard from a 73 Scout II

On the weber I ended up having to mod it to get it to run great. I ran it for about 5 years, then I put the 392 in. The 4 barrel on the 258 is a complete waste. My old 258 was bored 60 over, I had a 4.0 liter head on it and an amc intake on it. The weber or motorcraft 2 barrel are the best carbs for that motor.
I still have the weber on the shelf, if I ever get a 6 again.
