cam for a 196

I need help selecting the correct cam for my 196. Jeff tells me that I can get one custom ground, go stock, or grab one off the shelf that already has a custom grind. The 196 is going in a '63 Scout 80. The truck will see mainly highway miles, with some mild off roading. The idea is to someday driving it coast to coast. I am raising the compression of the engine to 9.5, no more than 10. I also have plans to balance the crank, do some slight decking/milling of the head and block. I don't want a really high performance grind, just one that is geared toward slightly higher performance. Better fuel efficiency would be a definite plus. Any ideas as to what kind of grind I'm going to go with?

I moved your thread to a more appropriate sub-forum.

If you cruise through the other threads here, you will find similar discussions.

Michael,

I lost the cam card for the custom grind we have. Can you ask dave what the specs are for the 260 cam as this grind May work well with what grendel is asking for.

We need to know "which" 196 engine is the base unit for this engine build as the camshafts between the two versions are different in design.

If the engine block is an earlier 196, it will have the fuel pump mounted on the driver side of the block about mid-way down the side of the crankcase under the intake manifold. That engine block requires a camshaft core with the drive cam for the mechanical fuel pump.

If the 196 is a later model Scout II version mounted in an "upright" fashion, then those use a fuel pump mounted to the passenger side of the timing cover/forward, same as on an sv engine. That cam requires a fuel pump eccentric to be installed to the face of the timing gear, same as on the sv.

I've emailed the cam card to Jeff per his request after discussing this engine again with dave.

We still need to know "which" 196 engine we're talking and "which" cam core will be needed.

The cam came from a '67 or '68 model 196 with the mechanical fuel pump mounted on the driver side.

I don't understand why this post has been deleted. I'm buying the cam from IH Parts America and have already sent the cam core off to Jeff.

I did not delete your post or thread!

Hgtraveler posted inappropriate comments and information in a response.

The four cylinder cams we have available right now are for the "early" 196 (and also all 152 versions). Those will have the fuel pump cam lobe located in the proper position to operate an oem mechanical fuel pump.

Woops, sorry. I misread post for thread

great, that is the style cam I need. I'll just wait for the specs to come back on the cam Jeff has on the shelf. Hopefully it will do the trick.

Specs for the 4cyl performance cam are:

duration - 260*
@ .050 lift - 212*
valve lift - .440 with a 1.5 rr .470 in an IH with a 1.6 rr
lobe lift - .293
lca - 110*
intake centerline - 106*

hope this answers your question.

I've had a few setbacks with my 196, but I'm getting close to the point where I can begin putting it together. I had some questions earlier about the differences between the stock 196 cam specs and the performance one I bought from Jeff. --mainly about valve springs and if I needed to replace them with stiffer ones or to accommodate somehow for increased lift. I put the stats over on binderplanet and this is the response that I got:
>>>>>
>>>I don't remember what the full specs are on the stock camshaft, but I think they are close to the following.

Intake:
adv 250ish
0.050" 180ish
lobe lift 0.250"ish
valve lift 0.400"ish
exhaust:
adv 250ish
0.050" 180ish
lobe lift 0.230"ish
valve lift 0.395"ish

what you have is a good amount more cam than stock. I highly recommend you have good valve springs. At least 9.0:1 compression ratio, some mild porting on the head (intake and exhaust) along with some intake mods and more carb cfm's. Otherwise you're looking at a narrow power band with sluggish lowend torque and not much better than stock topend power.<<<
<<<<<<<<

is this accurate or is this binderplanet member misguided? I have to admit this is the first engine I've ever built and I'm still learning loads of stuff. My knowledge about cams is limited. But when I purchased this cam I was told it was a mild grind--not that aggressive. Please help in untangling my confusion. Thanks.
