Cage or roll bar current tubing costs and suppliers

Hello,

I've begun planning an addition to my show bar to head towards a cage. I've been searching suppliers of tubing and see few prices reported. Approximately what is 2" 0.12 wall dom and hrew tubing going for now? Any local supplier recs (east bay)?

My show bar is 2". My first effort will extend the protection rearward to protect the desperate souls in the back seat. I call these people my kids. Is 2" 0.12 hrew or dom recommended? Overkill for a light wheeler? :out:

My thoughts are unless your building a race car or a rock buggy you plan on rolling over repetably , dom is over kill and way to pricey . Std. Tubing .120 wall should be fine . You can check tube sales , alco,bay area metal shorts , naylor steel , for pricing . Cary ,dave, and a few others went in on a bulk buy of tubing a while ago . They May have some more info .
 
When I built my cage, I went through albany steel. I don't remember if they stock round tube or not but I know they can get it within a day or two. I built my cage about a year and a half ago and they had the best prices back then.
 
As mochamike mentioned, 1.75 x .120 wall will be ok. The full cage in my 73 Scout is 1.75". Closest place I found that stocks dom tubing is team tube up in vallejo area. I don't recall the pricing. I do have a tube bender with 1-1/2" and 1-3/4" dies for bending those two sizes of tube.

I know albany steel carries square tubing but not sure about the round tube
 
Thanks for mentioning the bender scooter, that leans me towards 1.75". The 2" seemed overkill but the current bar is 2" so I thought I'd go for consistency. I'll let that go now.

Any words of wisdom or regret in their rear cage designs? I currently put a mtn bike in the back (top is off) and hope to maintain that ability without big hassle.

ps. Currently I'm heading in direction of 1.75" hrew. Anyone want to add to my order? I'll try albany steel first for proximity and will consider modesto next. Does anyone have 1.75" they want to unload?
 
The cage in my 73 beast was not designed well at all. When it was installed, the e-brake handle was broke off in order to make the front hoop work. Also causing the glove box door not to be opened - lame. I plan on re-designing and redoing it, at some point. My current cage will allow full access to the bed area of my Scout

I do have a full 20' stick x .120 wall (maybe another half a stick, too) of 1-3/4" dom tube. If albany steel does not carry, I'm sure they can order it. Another place you could check, that stacey's Dad mentioned, is naylor steel. I have not shoped there, but from thier web site, it looks like they carry a fairly good veriety.

If ya need help building a cage, let me know. As long as the tube aint schedule 40 pipe, my bending die will bend it. If it's schedule 40 pipe, then a new die would be required.
 
Albany just got back to me...they can special order 1.75" (not stocked). 0.12 wall. Approximately $50/20ft. Can order as small as 20ft.

Even if someone was 20% cheaper (I.e. Modesto), it probably wouldn't pay for the gas to get there in the Scout.

I'll probably order 2 sticks to start. I'm happy to add to my order if anyone wants some but given there is no minimum order, I'm not sure I see the merrit in it other than the pickup economy. I'm in alameda. Let me know by Monday if anyone wants some.

Wow, I have the impression the steel business is slow, I've never gotten quotes back so quickly. Naylor sells 1.75 hrew (0.12 wall) $2.27/ft. It appears they have it in stock and are open saturdays. Hard to beat. They charge a buck a cut.

These guys are only a couple miles from me to boot!

For a Friday the 13th, I'm feeling lucky...

Lucky 13 = cool deal
it is slow through out the industry. I work ful time during the week, in an iron Foundry in oakland, and it has been very slow for the last few years. This year did start off real strong, causing us to work lots of over time untill the last couple weeks.

I currently don't need any material at this time. But maybe at a later date.

Not sure how much or what length you can carry, if you pick it up your self, but I do have a chop saw here in my man cave of a shop space to cut the material. One option is if they can deliver and and an arrangement is made ahead of time, it can be delivered here, as long as I am here to receive it.

If memory suites my feable mind, a typical main hoop is roughly between 11' an 16' in length, roughly. So that May give ya an estimate of cut length if ya need to have the tube pre-cut. I'm not real fond of butt-welding the tube together. But could be done, if a slug(a smaller diameter tube) is used inside the two pieces of tube being welded together. Maybe others have more thoughts of on it.
 
Usually they will give you a better deal if you do a bulk buy.
I'd be down for 20-40' (1.75").

Delivery vs pick-up also can be a big factor as well.

I can paypal you if we get a good price.
 
You can try tube service in milpitas and any seven off road. I might be in for a couple sticks of 1 3/4" dom to help in the bulk price. Let me know what price you find.

How about an at speed roll? It sounds better to star over with the right material and run it front to back. I'm mostly thinking, like oakland jack, that my Scout isn't ready for kids. :nono:

Stock bar was good in the 70s/ok with a simple flop/roll-over.

If I was scooter I would have bought a lottery ticket.

If your going to build it, build it right.... (or get a good kit... Doesn't Jeff sell one for siis?)
 
With regards to my barrel roll - I was very lucky. That 2" diameter beauty bar I was sporten barely held up. The whole main hoop was bent to one side and a bit warped. At least now I know I can trust my welding on it, since I walked away from the scene on my own. And the joint held up like they were suppose to. And I think I faired better than a lottery ticket since I'm alive to talk about it.

But having a full cage would be much safer indeed. I wont do any major wheeling with out a full cage after my roll. That one I had is good for mall cruising and holden up a bakini top and that about it.

If I had the funds I would fork up some funds for material. But money is kinda funny at the moment. Plus they wont take monopoly money and my printer aint that good for printing my own.

With that being said, I'm all up for helping those with providing space and time to build thiers. My full cage in the 73 beast will hold off for the time being until I'm ready to re-design it. Food and soda is always good for bartering, but can be up for discussion at a later date
