brakes sound like a trumpet

Truck is a 73 1110 4wd with lockheed 11x3 brakes. I finally have it able to go down the road after much work. When I apply the brakes the fronts sound like an elephant trumpeting... No kidding! The booster, master cylinder, hoses, and wheel cylinders are all new. Shoes are relined and drums turned, within spec. My feeling is the friction material is the culprit. I have no idea what it is. I had my local auto parts send them out to be relined. Any ideas??

Im going thru the same exaxt thing right now. 72 1110 t'all with the same front set up. Its the friction matetial ive had my shoes relined now on the third try this time around. Ive shattered the material within 2 miles the first time then lost brakes as soon as that happened. This happened while making the trumpet sound u are talking about. The second time they relined it with a different compound and then it sounded like a fog horn. Again material started to shatter within 1 mile. Must got them back fri and lets see what happenes now. At this point im ready to do some mill work and make a front disc kit. Ill let u know if I find anything out.

I considered swapping to discs, but figured for an occasional driver the drums would be fine... Maybe not. I had the clutch relined by fort wayne clutch. It came back perfect. Thinking about sending the shoes there and having them relined.

Ya sure it's coming from the drum brakes themselves?

If you have power brakes with a booster for drums, have ya tried hearing if sound comes from engine compartment while you have someone step on brake pedal? Might be a bad diaphragm in booster

After relining the shoes twice I did one more final attempt with a different compound and then it all went away. I had same issue it was 100% the lining material.

Yep. I sent a set out to be relined and arced to my drums. With shipping to fort wayne indiana, total was 70 bucks. Stops great, no noise and only took three days, scott, who lines them, knows all about the lockheed setup. Says he does lots of them.
