Brake light issues

I have lost my brake lights. My rig was not running for a while and I changed a lot of the wiring. I have tested and replaced the brake light switch, cleaned the ground on the lights, and replaced all bad wiring I can find. My taillights are working but no brake lights. I replaced the steering column with one from a Chevy, and I haven't wired it for turn signals yet.

If I wanted to re-wire only the brake lights would I run 12v to one side of the brake light switch, then connect the wires going to the brake lights to the other side of the switch? If the grounds on the lights were bad, I don't think the tail lights would be working either.

Hey jerm, your brake lights and turn signals both run thru the turn signal switch in the columm.
Yes you can hook up brake lights as you discribed but your turn signal and brake light are the same filiment(bulb) in your taillight. So if you plan on wiring up the steering columm you will need to disconnect your temp brake light circiut.

I put a Chevy steering column from a 70's van in and tried to wire it with no luck. I would like to get the turn signals to work as well but am not sure how to wire it. Do you know how to adapt the Chevy column into the Scout wiring? I have a factory 80 wiring diagram to go off of.

Search the internets for the GM ts sw wiring color code, it stayed the same across many models and years, and set down with your schematic and start matching things up. Onn the GM sw you have 3 inputs, out from brake light sw, ts power through a flasher and fuse that receives switched power, hazard power through a flasher and fuse with constant power. 4 outputs 1 to each corner. There will also be a wire that is for the horn button to provide ground for the relay.

Download the wiring instructions from the qwikwire 14 circuit that Jeff sells.

I swapped a steering column out of an 86 Chevy pickup into the Scout when I did the rewire. Wired up just fine and shows you what wires go where based on the standard GM color code. You would just need to know what wires were your brake lights going into the ts switch on your binder.

Can I just say again how extremly pleased I am with that qwikwire harness and how simple it made my life?

Thanks for the help guys
I will let you know if I have any more questions
