Borg Warner Slush Box HELP!

Hi,
I have a 62' Scout 800 with the 152 4cyl. I have heard there was a rare borg warner automatic tranny that mated to this engine. Where can I find one and is there a specific borg warner model to seek out? I don't even care if I lose the 4wd I just want a slick auto conversion if possible.

Thanks Robert

Well, that would be a rare one indeed if it existed. A '62 Scout would be an 80 model which was never offered with an automatic. '66 was the first full year of the model 800 designation with '65 being sort of a mid-year transitional period with both 80 models and 800 models being produced. The bw 11 tranny was offered in the 800 model behind either the 266 or 304 sv8 engines. I don't know if they were ever mated to a 152 or 196 I-4. No doubt one of the more knowledgeable elders will chime in on that.

A borg warner 11 autotrans behind a 152 would be an entirely unsuitable combo in my book. For one...any donor would need to be major'd before installation and parts for those are nearly non-existent. No commercial shop would work on one, you'd have to find an old fart like me to even think about performing tranny surgery. I do have a few sources for some parts (soft goods and frictions), but if any hard parts are toast then the tranny is scrap.

The bw 11 sv torque converter setup would be entirely unsuitable for the I-4 motor power characteristics (horsepower is basically non-existent!). While the flex plate would bolt to a I-4 crank hub (with adapter), the balance factor is gonna be way screwed up since the flex plate and associated torque converter and cooling fan are set up for a 266 or 304. Without proper re-balance, it'll shake like a bitch.

The "space" factor alone should be enough to say no! The I-4 stuff in Scout 80/80 is very limited in where it can mount without extensive mods to the firewall and tunnel. The Scout 800 was designed for an sv motor install with either the bw tranny or the much larger four speed manual, while the bodies look similar, there is much detail difference under the skin. That "pancake" bell housing for the I-4 s80/s800 manual tranny was designed like that for a reason! That is the only platform it was used on by ihc, otherwise the bell housings for other platforms were nearly universal in design and application.

By far the most appropriate way to accomplish a slushbox inna s80 behind a 152 would be do a two wheel drive (short tailshaft) tf 727 made for the IH bell pattern and crank hub. That will eliminate the married d18/d20 transfer case. A donor from a sii two wheel drive with 196 will work with much effort, those motors were the "upright" mounting position of the laydown I-4 design. But ya need the flex plate and hub and converter.

A 4x4 727 with married transfer case from a sii can be shoehorned in with much difficulty and a body lift if you wanna keep it in the oem location. That will also take some sheetmetal work.

Anything is possible given fabrication ability, suitable donor components, and much cash!

Sure...a commercial tranny shop can deal with a 727 (as opposed to a bw 11) but is this cost effective??? Having an sv-app torque converter rebuilt to I-4 specs and then having the whole rotating assembly neutral balanced is gonna run around $300 minimum.

Many applications of the bw slushbox in fullsize trucks had no provision for transmission cooling, the only cooling was accomplished through the use of a fan component attached to the torque converter assembly with fresh air intake vents cast into the bell housing. And that only cooled the converter. Sometime around '66 or so, the marine-type heat exchanger was incorporated on some fullsize applications, along with sv-powered s800. And those items are a pita to deal with if they have rotted away internally, filling any donor trans with engine coolant.

One of our members here (and our IHSTO club president) does have a highly-built 727 behind an I-4 motor inna s80 (kinda s80!). It's a dedicated pro-level rockcrawler so it's not any where close to "stock"! I understand from a conversation last week with him that the powertrain for that rig May be up for sale as an entire package so ya might ring his bell about that. Check the classifieds for details.
