Body parts replacement

Hi all, well I think you guys will be my IH source for info, name Mark from so cal.

I started removing all body parts from a Scout II I bought that I''ve been working on, and now I'm at the rear quarters and end caps, I don't see many bolts or any to allow to assume thats all thats holding it in place.

Are the rear 1/4s tack welded? I'm no big mechanic I just dove into this to save some $ from others doing it for me. Any pointers on how to remove these 1/4s and end caps., these are the good ones I want to keep for my Scout.

Look closely around the perimeter of the rear quarters, there's about 100 small spot welds that hold it to the body. If you take some 100 grit sandpaper and run it along the seams the spot welds will show up better.

Once you find them, estimate where the center is and use a center punch to make a divot. If you don't have a spot weld cutter bit you can use a "pilot point" drill bit from home depot, I use 1/4" and sometimes 5/16".

Don't just drill all the way through, go slowly and try to stop after you get through the first layer. Sometimes it will pop and it will be obvious that you are through.

Once all the spots are drilled you'll need a chisel, air chisel kicks ass on this part, to separate the panels.

Take the rear quarter and end cap off as a unit, don't try to separate them because you will do a lot of damage to one or both.
 
Just picked up everything on that list of items I need, don't want to do a piss poor job on it, need to not damage my fenders.

Back again with one more ? Just unveiled the back cargo area of the tub I plan on using and its rusted near tailgate areas and wheel wells. My parts Scout has a way better cargo area, can this be removed and replaced? Trying to make sure every piece of steel on this rig will have no big pockets of rust. Or should I just slap some diamond plating back there?

Putting diamond plate over it won't make it go away. It will just continue to rot and eventually your rear will sag because your body mounts will be gone.

Best way is to cut out the rust and weld in new metal. Your budget, though, will decide what you do.
 
I imagine this process still is recommended if I find a good cargo floor off another Scout to remove and to place in my Scout I am building? Before I start cutting, I should remove gas tank?
 
You can also just get some sheet steel and make your own cargo floor, it May not have the ribs in it but it will be solid and you won't have to cut up another tub.

If you want to claim it as a total loss, don't remove your gas tank. If you like your Scout get the tank out and put it outside while you cut or weld. Be careful of any fuel lines or wiring too.
