Binder Bee Game Discussion

I need a proposal with options!

I'd prefer to not take folks out in the main parking lot away from the center of action. But that would be doable as long as powerland is not in the process of setting up the parking grid for steam-up. And that area is included in our current rental agreement so there would be no additional cost. Cost is a major consideration due to a very limited production budget.

I think more appropriate would be the large grass area (referred to as the north grounds) behind the truck museum (referenced from where we set up) and in front of the new truck museum maintenance facility. It's irrigated and mowed and is a very nice space...but we'll have to rent that spot as an additional contract line item for one day. And we'll need a portable pa system to use for the games also, so we need someone to step up with a donated system, we don't have the budget to rent any additional stuff. And some day...when the bee is a much larger event participant-wise, we'll have to use that area also.

We are also going to have to make sufficient space for the swap meet which is going to be a new added attraction for bee 2010.

Why does the thought of "heads inna duffle bag" keep swirlin' around?

I think thats its going to be better to have it where everyone can see it from their rigs/booths/wherever. If we have it in the outer parking lot I dont think many people are going to head out there to check it out. If we can put it between the mill and the vendors it will get a much better response and we shouldnt have to have a pa. We definatlly dont want to put any additional financial burdon on the bee, especially for the first year of having the games, maybe if its a huge hit we can see about expanding for next year. Lets just get our feet a little wet and see how it goes.

Heres the list of games im thinking of (mainlly stollen from fsr, but why mess with a good thing!)

RTI ramp
slow crawl
plumb Bob thing off the front bumper (closest to the cone wins)
tight turn radius.
Possablly blind driver if we have the room.

I'll provide all cones and clip boards with score cards, all I'll need if a few helpfull volenteers to run stop watches and write down scores.

I'll be there on Thursday to set up/ make sure all the games will fit and go over a schedual with the bee head honchos. I'm thinking that Saturday afternoon around 1-2 would be best. In past experiences for me personally ive seen most everything by then and could use something fun to watch.

What do you guys think?

Portable pa should be easy. All they were using at IHSFR was a guitar amp with a microphone, if not that I am sure we can find a bull horn somewhere.

x2 on the attitude:icon_up:

Blind driver has to be an event, if for no other reason than to watch our prez Tag every cone on the course.

Ive got a portable pa if we do end up needing it.

Heres a map for reference, am I missing anything Mike?

Damn I knew that was coming. Maybe we could have an event call the "blind cone crush" I would kick so much ass at that! I think it is very important to have things that I can win...:dita:

seriously though....that list sounds good dboy..

Plan on the portable pa daniel...we can use it for other things also, lyle takes care of the portable pa for the music hall so we don't have to rent it from powerland. We do have to rent the announcer's tower and pa however for the show duration.

The area ya show for the games most likely would not be available. Currently the large steam traction engines are parked there since that is their maintenance spot and they come and go in prep for steam up, the following event after the bee. But very soon, major construction will be started in that whole area for the line shaft shop operation, blacksmith's shop expansion, and expansion of the saw mill itself.

Powerland occasionally updates their website with a newsletter that outlines current construction activity which is being majorly dialed up right now during the winter shutdown. Keep in mind there are seven+ independent organizations with ground leases at powerland, each doing their own thing to a degree...and much of what appears to be available dirt is actually under lease and utilizing that space involves quite a bit of negotiation and money!

This pic is the ex-army mobile machine shop owned by the brooks depot museum which is pulled out during steam up and parked in the location you reference, currently up for sale as a fundraiser ($8500). If it doesn't sell, it will go on permanent display in the spot you are describing also.

Our relationship with powerland is outstanding and becomes more productive every year. But...we have to remain very flexible in our dealings with pl management, an example is the water system upgrade project we encountered during bee/'07! That is why we do a walkthru with the pl folks the week before we set up the bee!

I've seen this done off the rear bumper, where you've got to back up and turn, like you were pulling out of a parking space. The club also did this the 1 time we did truck games. We've got a dart board for it kicking around. I'll find it and send it along with Mike today.

Alrighty, well I'll just plan on doing the games in the outer parking lot so we'll have plenty of room for when uber decides to take out all our cones.

Do you still need a writen proposal or is the forum talk good enough for now?

My experience planning games is that you will underestimate the area needed. At regionals that’s all we had was room. The amount of area the rallye uses for its entire games is equal to the blind man at regionals...it was fun; and funny. Randy buchanan and dave perez always laid out funky courses. With a game this long, the “timing judge” always gets a good workout. Next year we’re gonna have the games field mowed back another 150 feet. That will make bm more interesting.

As was mentioned earlier, the key to dealing with powerland is flexibility. I agree with having the games "inside" the grounds and that should be first priority so people don't have to go "outside" and away from the vendors and club booth sales. I mentioned the parking lot without fully thinking it through. As Mike m stated, to use the north field would cost more $$. We need to keep an eye on what powerland is doing as far as new construction. If we lose space due to new construction, then maybe the use fee will be reduced.

Would it be possible to put the swap meet in the covered area in front of the tractor barn? That would depend on how many folks brought stuff to swap. Iirc, it was open this year.......or was it?

We need to keep powerland informed about our needs and remain flexible. It will all work out and bb '10 will be a great show.

Lyle

We need a formal "games" proposal presented to the bee team daniel to go along with all our Binder Bee planning activities. The bee production team doesn't deal in the nuts and bolts of the operation in a public forum.

If we decided to do games, then we'll work with powerland to secure the necessary space that works for everyone.

Same for the swap meet. I'd already determined that the area in front of the barn would be the ideal spot after seeing how that was utilized with commercial vendors during steam up. Both that space and the entire barn was taken over by vendors. The actual steam up swap meet covered about five acres in the area which I described as possibly being a site for the games behind the truck museum.

This is a shot of the steam up swap meet area behind the truck museum and in front of the vintage car service station looking towards the truck museum

Dboy came through! Nice proposal for the games daniel!

We discussed this at our IHSTO board planning session Saturday and it's a go! I'll take care of procuring a location when I negotiate the powerland contract for 2010.

I especially like the "simplicity" of yawl's proposal, the four individual activities fits right in! And we will be able to provide minimal awards for the games, most likely something very unique!

Jen can git ya up to speed regarding what we talked about when ya see her next.

Personally...I'm very excited about the "trail boss team" and the dial-up of trail off-road activities as a major component of Binder Bee. It's great that you had a chance to see the rallye methodology firsthand for some background. As in everything else we do within IHSTO we try and have an array for all kinds of vehicle-related activities that fit any member's interests. And continuing that tradition, the board will soon be announcing a full schedule of activities for 2010 that includes something for everyone on a monthly basis!

I May be able to offer some sort of "unique" prize ideas. The source we discussed last year could manage that.
