Bad coolant

I read one thread that touched this topic. My Scout was sitting for years and years, so when we got it we put in a new radiator, heater core, heater valve, and rubber lines. We also flushed the system each way a number of times. Recently my coolant is brown so I flushed again. Now a month or so later its back to brown. Which cleaners are the best and/or what else helps. Thanks.

For a "safe" flushing product used in a handi-dan environment I use prestone "super flush" but I install and then run it for several hours while driving or running the rig in the parking lot. And ya must do the "back flush" procedure making certain the heater control valve is wot the entire time. One of those "flush and fill" kits installed permanently makes this a real easy job, all my stuff has a backflush attachment installed permanently, those are dirt cheep to purchase.

Then treat with a product such as the swepco rmi-25 system treatment. That stuff cannot be replicated with any off-the-shelf treatment from the local parts house, the swepco stuff is pro-grade used in truck fleet preventative maintenance programs since the beginning of time!!!

And...make certain you never use any of the "dex cool" bullshit coolant packages in any vehicle!!!! GM deserves to be bankrupt just for bringing that shit to market years ago! And it's identified by it's amber coloration which is a dye additive. I can talk that dex cool-induced rot and clog shit for hours after spending years fighting it in dealerships around the country! Google up dex cool and you'll see the horror stories...and that is not urban myth!!!! I was there when it happened and it cost my own company millions!!!

It is really hard to remove all of the silt that collects at the bottom of the cylinder water jackets. I recommend removing all of the side freeze plugs and blasting with a nozzle on your garden hose. I also use a wire to loosen the silt. No way to get all of it but this will help.

I can't reinforce what Robert sez enuff! You still have prolly a coffee can fulla precipitate that looks like concrete in the water jacket at the base of the cylinder castings. Big chunks that cannot be removed with any kind of "flush".

Pop the core plugs out and you will see. And start pokin' and stirrin' with a water hose/pressure washer immediately before the stuff solidifies.

I also use chunks (18" or so) of old speedo cable that I've frayed out the ends on, chuck it inna drill motor and use like a sewer snake to git all inside there to stir up the mung on both sides while washin' down. Caution, that shit will stain yore concrete permanent-like!

Don't forgit to install new core plugs before adding the fresh coolant! This ain"t a satidy mornin' quickee kinda job!!!

Look around in various threads in the engine sub-forum and you will see pics of what this crap looks like.

Michael et al......

Thanks for the plug on the rmi-25, however it is not a swepco product, it is manufactured by radiator masters in good 'ole sacra-tomato, but one that I have used since 1986 and have been a factory warehouse distributor for the last 8 or 9 years. You have hit the nail on the head.... There is no other product like it, but unfortunately, the family that produced it has decided to pack it in due to the fact that both parents have passed and the siblings thought it best to either sell, or just close down and liquidate the assets. There is some interest from another company to purchase the recipe and the company records, and hopefully, if this is a go, then I'll be able to get back into it again.

Most all distributors, including myself are out of stock and what little the stores and dealers still have will be first come first serve basis. I believe Jeff at ihon and Isa at Isa's International Harvester down south still have some left. You can go to the purchase page to get more information on the product or contact them direct.

Thanks for the correction and update dick!

And a kalifornikate company still makin' real stuff that works like the old days and not only good for deodorant for berzerkeley treesitters??? What a bummer that they are goin' away!

Are ya comfortable with recommending any product that May be somewhat effective once the supply is gone?

Unfortunately, the rmi-25 cooling system treatment was/is a one of a kind product..... There is no comparable product on the market that I know of which even comes close. With it being non-toxic and bio-degradeable also put it in a class of its own.... Just check the ingredient list on the other products available at the parts stores..... Some of them are highly acidic and corrosive, and not a one of them has a cleaning action as well as protectant.

I am being hopeful that someone will pick this up, as it was a great product to promote.
