Bad brake light on 800A

I have a 70 800a, 304, 4x4. The driver side brake light is giving me problems. Tail light and turn signal are fine, but no stop light on that side. The passenger side tail light works great. I replaced the brake light switch behind the break pedal, put in a new bulb and still nothing. I used a test light on the light bulb holder for the bad tail light and did not get power from it when the brakes were applied. I also checked the connection behind the reverse light for my brake lights and was with out power with the brakes were applied also. Any ideas?
 
I have 2 ideas.
1. Could be a bad light socket or ground, but you say you do have turn signals. Maybe the bulb, are both l&r the same bulb? I've been known to substitute a wrong bulb in troubleshooting.

2. Bad turn signal switch. That seems counter to having working turn signals, but all power for both sides when the brake light switch is closed goes through the turn signal switch. It is a double pole double throw switch, maybe one of the poles is bad when it's in center position. There's a connector near the bottom of the column, if you can correlate the pin out with the wire numbers, you should be able to see if there's continuity through the switch for the left side when it's in center or tripped positions. Here's some wire code #s we hope Are still on the wire:

463 from brake light switch to red wire from hazard switch to center pole of turn signal
115 left rear turn/brake light
117 right rear turn/brake light

the last I checked turn signal switches ain't cheap, at least the ones for the 800's.

Its not the bulb, I switched the the working right tail light bulb into the left tail light and it still didn't work. I will try looking at the turn signal switch. There is quite a bit of free play in the turn signal arm.
 
Greg, thanks for the info. Turns out it was the turn signal switch. I turned it to the left turn signal then to the right turn signal and now that left stop light is coming on. I wonder if its a bad contact or what. A new turn signal switch is $110. Like I said before there is quite a bit of free play in the signal arm. Up and down free play before it engages, no side to side free play though.

And...a turn signal switch is really fairly easy to disassemble and clean. It is tedious and ya need to take good pics of the contact arrangements as it's disassembled though.

Do not just spray contact cleaner in the switch mechanism, that will only make it worse.

If you want to attempt a repair of the existing switch, you must post a pic of which one you have, there were at least two used...possibly three on those steering columns.

What you have described is very common with items like this on vehicles which sit for months/years/decades and are then brought back to life.
