backing off rear brakes help

I have a 72 1210 with a Dana 60 rear end, trying to remove the rear brake drum, brakes need to be loosened. I appears I need to turn the adjuster from 6 to 12 oclock, or up, but how do I hold the stopper in order to do this, turns and clicks to tighten, but not the other way. I can't see where this is. Thanks

Probably the self adjuster arm resting on the star wheel.

It is a "little bit" above the top of adjusting slot.

If you get your head down low and shine a small flashlight "up" the slot, you should be able to see it.

You can use a small screwdriver to hold it away from the star wheel.

I spent 2 hours on it last night and still no luck, the star adjuster is so rounded now that I don't know how I am going to turn it. The drum was very hard turning so I also think I have a problem with the inner bearing maybe being stuck on. This truck has been sitting several years. I moved the drum about a inch without doing anything, then it stopped coming off. I can see enough that there is no daylight around the shoe and the drum. Any other tricks???

Grind off or chisel off the " brake shoe spring hold down pin " that go thru from the back side of the backing plate.that actually hold the shoe's on.the 1st pic you can see my pen pointing at the hold down pin.( #24) thats holding the spring tight to the backing plate.get rid of that an it'll loosen the shoes, pic # 2 show's the pin holding the spring to the shoe,it's circled.then you can move the drum off or away more to get a hold of the adjuster better.Jeff

My 74 1210 was doing the same thing. Huge ridge on a shot drum and a rusted out adjuster were the problems. Half a can of penetration oil and an overnight soak freed up the adjuster so I could back off the brakes. Otherwise x2 for what Jeff said.

I finally got if off, I was ably to pry it out enough to get in their with a bigger chisel and turn the adjuster another turn and it came off. Thanks

If you end up needing a drum for that rear end I do have one good one that has never been turned. It is off of my '73 1210 with d60. For that matter I have the entire rear end including brake hardware and non leaking cylinders... I changed out to a '78 Ford f350 d61.... So if you need any hard to find parts let me know.
