axle puzzle

I am working on this d-44 front axle that I am going to put into my 800a. I got it from a guy in Colorado who is supposed to be good. It has been cut and turned. Here is my question: there doesn't seem to be any seal at the end of the axle tube. The axle shaft itself doesn't seem to have a polished surface behind the u-joint yoke for a seal to ride on. I checked the Dana corp. Web site and the exploded drawing they show does not have a seal in the end of the axle tube. So, is that, in fact, the set-up? If it is, I wonder how you keep water from entering the tube and eventually entering the pumpkin, when you submerge the axle?

There is no seal at the outer c, only one on the tube side of the bearing cap. You have to pull the carrier to inspect it.

What Chad said is correct.
but There is an aftermarket seal you can get if you want to also seal the axle there.

Jeff, how would I deal with the fact that the axle shaft does not have a machined surface for the seal to ride on? I don't think it would last long riding on the axle shaft, rusty and pitted as it is.

Is the sealing surface that was originally there rusted away? If so we usually replace the shaft as I am not to keen on using a speedi-sleeve in this particular application.
