Axle carts

Since we all know space can be a preimum in our shops, I needed a way to easily move my axles around. I still have to have my woodworking equipment accessable while working on the Scout. I was in tractor supply a couple weeks ago and saw these "moving dollies" on sale for $20. Each. They're rated at 1000# and the castors are worth more than $20. So, I bought some.

Here's what I came up with.

The standards are 3/4 inch scrap plywood. As the photo illustrates, I worked out the height to allow easy access from my "work stool" aka - old office chair. The axles fit nice and tight in the brackets and will stay where you want them.

On another note, will somebody pm me and tell me how to make the pictures appear in the post without having to "click" on them?!?!?

Cool deal. Looks good. I have been planning on doing something very similar. Since I don't work with wood much, even though I have a table saw, I was considering using a form of square tubing. Along with a cradle clamping system around the axle tube. That way the clamp on the tube would hold the pinion yoke at any angle while working on the axle

So far, the only way I have been able to attach a decent photo with out having to click on the link is to upload my photos to a photo sharing site, like photobucket. Then do a direct link to the photo to be posted. There maybe another way, but I haven't fingered it out yet.

thx scooter, but when I install pics, they come right off my comp.? Jeff

I do that too sometimes. And when I do, it turns out that one ends up having to click on the attachment link to view the photo. As I mentioned earlier, my work around on it is to use something like photobucket and load my photos up on there and then use a direct link to my photos from photobucket in order for them to show up automatically in my posts

and those axle carts do look decent. Always nice to be able to move them out of the way when you're not working on them so you can move onto other projects

Scooter, not sure if it's the use of plywood or the clearance of the cradle radius, but I can rotate the axles to any position and they stay put. The front will be better when it gets "stripped". I was concerned about positioning when I layed them out. I cut a 2 3/4" radius in the standards and it holds well. Hth

the open area under the axle, between the rails of the dollie, is perfect for placing a catch can on another piece of ply to drain the gear oil. The axles really do remain where you roll them. I guess its the metal to wood friction?????

This:

once you upload the picture copy the http location - then hit the image icon in the thread editor (the yellow mountain thingy) then paste the image location and you've create an imbedded image.

You can also upload the pictures to a gallery on this site and do the same. Or upload them to an offsite hosting service and attach them the same way....

The image code after you hit the yellow mountain icon looks like this (I dropped the leading "[" so it would show the code and not the image):

Nice! I like it.

I need the build a cart like this. I have a few axle rolling around that I am tired of moving by hand! I think I am going with metal/tube and using vice-grip chain clamps to hold the axle at the desired rotation angle when I'm working on it.

Here is what I normally use. I do need a better clamp system but unless I am torquing down on the pinion or something it stay put. Its best feature is that its height adjustable
