Alternator Help!

Ok, was checking some things out under the hood today and was gunna hook up the electric choke. So I started checking for a 12v source and wow, found a wire with 17.2v!! So I check the battery..............17.2v!! So I go to the alternator and there is 1 wire hooked up.

The question....this a a delco-remy unit. Has the batt output and thats the only thing hooked up. It also has a 2 wire plug in the side of the case thats marked as best as I can see, 1/r and 2/f. Doesnt the 1/r or the 2/f have to have a battery voltage to it so the unit can regulate the correct voltage? I've looked all over the delco-remy site and cant fint this alternator.

Anyone know what the problem is?

We need pictures of what you describe so that identification May be made.

But...what you describe is certainly not an uncommon failure mode for a delcotron 10si..."out of control" alternator due to a meltdown of the internal regulator module.

I've mentioned in other threads on this forum that I've seen up to 60 volts being pumped out of these alternators while light bulbs are frying and instruments are going up in smoke.

And...one more reason to not do a "one wire" alternator hook-up.

Ya ever seen the aftermath of a conventional lead/acid battery explosion???
