Air Con

Hi guys,

I am contacting you from australia about air conditioning, we are all having trouble with our air con belts slipping and cat get enough grip! Has anyone had the same problem? If you could help us out with any advice jump on our forum or post here and I will pass the message on categories - isoca.com.au Thanks

You do not specify which IH vehicle -- Scout II or t/a - pickup.

It would seem your a/c belt is a little too long...

Rock auto shows 53" / 53 3/8" circumference for a/c belts. (sorry, cannot do the "metric math" - especially this late...)

are your belt(s) slightly longer than the above?

Thought of a couple other things --

if you can deflect the belt more than 1/2" in the middle (between water pump and compressor), I would say the belt is too long. (assuming compressor is at its "max setting" on the platform).

Is the belt too narrow? -- I think IH belts are 13mm and 15 mm will work.

If the belt is too long, you could ask for a belt based on its size -- I assume you could use one 2 - 3 inches shorter (in circumference / length) than the one you have. Sometimes parts catalogs are wrong or do not list all the variations... Especially on "old" vehicles.

Slim chance, but belt pulleys do wear out...

Hi there,
its a 1979 traveler, and we run york pumps on them here in oz and we all have issues, our belts are 61 inch long, and they do the air con and the power steer, when we transfer it over to the left side of the car we loose a pulley for adjustment and we just cant get enough adjustment from them! We run a york pump here in australia, I have had a few suggestions from the guys out here of changing the pulleys over to a new type to run the new belts?

So I really dot know what to do which side of the engine is your air con pump and your power steer pump?

Thanks

Oops, forgot your traveler is probably right hand drive...

sitting in the front seat, the a/c is on the right side and the power steering is on the left. (my t/a does not have a/c).

They are driven by separate belts -- though the power steering shares a belt with the emissons air pump if the vehicle has one.

61" is the length of the belt(s) that drive the altenator (crankshaft / water pump / alt) on ours.

I do not know the availablity of v-belts in oz.

I checked rock auto catalog and came up with some slightly shorter belts that May work -- if you can get them in those lengths in oz.

There is more selection in 15mm width -- which will "set up" in the pulley a little.

Goodyear part numbers

13595 59 1/2 inches
15585 58 inches

dayco part numbers

15580 58 inches
15590 59 inches

gates part number

1560 60 inches
3v600 60 inches

I do not know about oz, but "generic" belt part numbers in the us are first 2 digits are width (like 13 / 15) and next 2 / 3 digits are length of belt.

This works for any v-belt (in the us) -- the p/s belt on my t/a is 13465.

I would try a 59" belt, but this is just a guess on my part... Maybe a 60 inch belt would be "short enough"...

Or, you could measure the length using a string or a flexible tape measure -- I think using the outside rim of the pulley will be "more accurate" than measuring in the groove (compared to the lengths listed in the parts books).
