Advance Questions

Ok, the got is running pretty damn good now! I can even get her to idle down to 350 rpms pretty smooth. However!!! I cant seem to get her to "r" out well. I think that I have to much initial advance, cant get it to "ping" at 6000'. I plan to cut her back a smigg at a time to see if I can get a little more go-go out of her.

My question is what is everyone running there initial advance at for best overall performance? I'm at something like 25-28* right now. Need to get a new timing light, my 30 year old one finally broke beyond repair.

I'm running 36deg total centrifugal + initial. Need a dial back light and disconect the vacuum advance before doing the check. Iirc the centrifugal maxxes out at 3400 rpm.

On my 65 the initial is at 14deg no vacuum adv connected.

Around the lower portion of the distributor housing there should be a thin aluminum band that is stamped with the delco part number for that distributor (there are many part numbers used on these engines).

Then compare that part number to the matrix shown in the service manual for all delco part numbers used in the 152/196 engine series, that tells what the specs for that distributor are, they do vary from p/n to p/n, they are not "all the same".

The most common delco p/n used in the earlier 152 is 1110266. Attached is the specs for that sparker. Keep in mind, the rpm specs are distributor rpm as used with a distributor machine, not engine rpm.
