A.I.R. removal

Hi fellow IH lovers.

I have a question. We decided to get the air system out of the way and did like the tutorial said ...put in set screws at 1/2 inch by 20 threads per inch. All good.

But after we finished - we noticed that some of the tubes that came out with the air system were short...some long...some with compression like fittings...some loose...we even pulled a set screw out and saw that a piece of tubing was still in there...wow!

Ok ..so now I am worried...is it possible that there are pieces of tube still down there...and can it cause mechnanical damage? When we start her?

I did pull another set screw today to see if I could see another peice of tubing...and it appears there is a piece of some kind of tubing...now mashed to the orifice...not good! Or...maybe its not big deal....and I ought not worry?

Any help with intel...would be appreciated

"some" (but certainly not all) engines assembled with an a.I.r. System used a short tubular insert down in the exhaust port. Then the primary tube manifold was inserted and the gland nuts snugged down.

Other air manifolds simply had a "bead" formed on the end of each tube that served somewhat like flare (since the gland nut is the same part as a typical flare nut), to assist in sealing the port from an exhaust gas or air leak.

All that matters is that the hole is securely plugged and you don't have an exhaust leak (safety issue). Even if a piece of one of the insert/tubes should rot and fall into the exhaust port, it's simply going to be blown down into the muffler where it will eventually rot into dust.

You "might" be able to fish the end of the tube out with very thin needlenose pliers, or maybe snake it out using a spiral type e-z out tool. Otherwise. Just leave it alone!

Some folks claim that these modded ports "whistle" when the engine is running, I've probably done 25+ "conversions" myself using only the 1/2"x20 set screws with anti-seize and never heard one whistle, and that includes way back when I still had some hearing ability!
