I notice I have all components in engine bay for the ac but when I started taking apart interior I failed to notice that huge vent system and knob that allows you to turn it on, theres a toggle swith that I am assuming goes to a/c but not sure. Can the a/c be turned on without the vent assembly thing, I have that black box thats attached to firewall under glove compartment

You will need to post pics of the entire system/components in order to be able identify the a/c system you have. Your description of the evaporator unit tells me that it's an aftermarket under-dash hung unit, not a so-called "factory" installation.

It could actually be an IH-supplied "kit" installation, those were sold through the IH dealership parts departments. Those were aftermarket kits (not produced by IH) sold as an accessory item. Several other aftermarket companies also manufactured and sold similar add-on kits, lone star, clardy, ara, wynn's, etc. During that period. The under-dash evaporator assemblies were all nearly identical in design/execution and and used common components that are still available from a few sources today,including complete evaporator assemblies.
