The actual shoe table on both shoes is the same john. But the "short" lining goes forward, that is referred to as the "primary" shoe and is normally a slightly different friction material compound, ya May notice a color difference.
The "secondary" shoe is the one towards the rear with the longer piece of friction material.
As for the "star" adjusters, I can never remember which goes on which side without simply trying 'em on with the self-adjuster hardware installed. I know...I'm supposed ta know shit but after several hundred brake jobs they all look the same!
Clean the star adjuster components really well, then apply some type of antisieze to the treads to prevent corrosion and galling over time. Then set one in place and look at how the self-adjuster tang operates the star when the cable is pulled and released. It should work to open the star adjuster wider with each "click. If ya get the wrong one mounted and it closes, then swap for the other one!
You are real fortunate that ya actually have functional self-adjuster hardware that is usable! Much of that stuff is nla and we simply continue to rob stuff where we can find it and modify accordingly!
I haven't had self adjusters on the front lockheed brake system on my beater truck in over ten years. But last summer a couple of friends gifted me all the lockheed brake stuff they had salvaged and now I have a full set of hardware.
So I have a spare set of lockheed shoes at the re-liner now along with a pair of drums they are turning and then they will "arc" the riveted lining shoes to the fresh drums.
