800 scout fuel issue

I have a ‘67, 800 scout, 196ci, 4x4 daily driver. I’ve owned this truck for 4 years.
Previous owner removed the pass side fuel tank, so I only have the 9 gallon tank on the drivers side. Gas gauge is spotty.

I was driving and the truck just quit running. I always carry a 2 gal gas jug, filled with ethanol-free 90, in the back. I figured I had ran out of gas, so I poured 3/4 of my gas jug in the tank,, and saved some for priming. Turned key,, she’s not firing. Primed carburetor, tried again. She fired for a second,, then nothing. Checked what I could, and had my son tow me to the house. Let her cool down (vapor locked I was thinking?), and tried again to start,, nothing unless I prime the carb. So I parked her. It’s hot down here in SC,,, figured I work on it on a day off.

Yesterday early, I start checking. Kicked the right front tire and tired to start, nope. Took off breather, Primed her, and she fired only for a few seconds. While priming noticed a leak from the side bowl. Removed bowl cover from the Holley 1904, and she was dry as a bone. New gasket needEd, I figed. Put back together and then I removed fuel line from carb. Turn her over,, no flow of gas coming out. Visually checked fuel pump and I can see gas through the glass. Did not take off/apart fuel pump. Vacuum, fuel lines all looked good.

Go under the truck to to fuel tank. A rubber gas line comes out of the front side of the tank, and is attached to a metal fuel line going to the pump. I unattached the rubber line, ready with an empty gas jug underneath. Nothing flowed from the tank! I blew in the rubber hose,, and can hear the bubbles. I know I poured almost 2 gallons in that tank! Ain’t going to suck it.

I believe I need a carburetor,,, or a rebuilt kit for it. And a fuel pump. I have daily driven the Scout for over 3 years, and enjoyed every mile.

Is my thinking sound? Is there anything I’m missing? Thank you!

Verify that the fuel pump is operating. Undo the lines coming to/from the pump. Get your gas can out and drop a line into it that is hooked up to the fuel pump and crank over the engine. If it doesn't pump fuel, then you have found the problem. If it does pump fuel, then you simply lost the prime because it ran dry or the pickup tube in the fuel tank has some rust holes and thus is not picking up fuel. We have had it happen where they have lost prime, and by carefully applying air pressure to the tank via the filler (and a rag to take up the extra space), fuel will push out of the feed line and thus the prime restored. Hope that all makes sense.

Caught a day off today, set to working on my Scout fuel issue.

Took fuel line off carb, and turn her over. No fuel came out. So I took off the fuel pump. Notice the rocker arm was froze. The pivot pin had slid out of place, yet was still on 1/2 way. Squared everything back up, and reinstalled the pin. Put the fuel pump back on.

It took quite a few 10 second “turn overs“ till the fuel bowl was full. Then, I removed the fuel line from the carb,,, and did a couple more “turn overs” and fuel came pushing out. Hooked fuel line back up, prime the carb,,, and we are running again. 👍
