78 Scout Won't Restart Help

Hello.

I am new to IH parts. Just acquired a 78 Scout II, as my older brother has a 73 Scout II. We picked it up in georgia, and I shipped it here to texas last week. Before it was put on the hauler, we had my brothers mechanic do a full tune up and oil change, new points and distributer cap, new plugs and wires and all old crumbly vacuum hoses replaced. The Scout ran fine on delivery, and let me drive it around the neighborhood for 3 days and got a safety inspection for registration.

My Scout finally died as I was playing with shifting into 4wd as I shut the motor off bc my gears sounded like they were grinding, when I put this beast in park. I did this 2 more times and cut my vehicle off in my driveway. My third time trying to crank the car and it now won't turn over.

This morning I figured id replaced the ignition coil and condenser, and jumped cables to my other cars battery for a jumpstart. I tested, and and getting current on the leads of the coil and fuel is being pumped into the carb. I even pulled a spark plug and turned the ignition to see if I was getting any spark. What else could I be missing if all of a sudden my running truck, turns over but now I get no sparks. Also there is no gold box on my car as I have been reading about this I the forum. Please point me in any direction.

Thanks,
isaac

Assuming that last picture of the carb is with the engine cold, the choke is not closed. It should snap closed when cold, there is a bimetal spring that expands and contracts when the engine temps change in the little metal box on the manifold. Try having someone hold the choke closed to see if it starts.

I will try this, but I still am not seeing any spark on one of the plugs I removed and left connected to the plug wire. I just am trying to figure out where my spark went.

Thanks

If you have a test light. Ground one end and touch the other in to the negative side of coil. It should blink when cranking. Meaning that your points or eletronic ignition is working. I would also test for spark directly out of the coil. Wire that hooks to the distributor. If you have a flashing light on the negative side of the coil and no spark b out of the coil. Bad coil. If you have spark out of the coil but nothing to the plugs. Check the condition of the cap, rotor and ignition wires.

I don't have an automatic on my Scout, but I'm wondering whether or not the neutral safety switch could cause this. I mean if that switch fails you May see the behavior you are seeing.

There is an ongoing thread from this poster over on bp. Its an electrical/ignition issue. The engine was retrofitted at some point prior to his ownership from electronic ignition to a prestolite points distributor. It appears that a proper ballast resistor was not added as part of this retrofit. The points show heat discoloration which is a common occurrence when they are subjected to excessive voltage. It also appears that someone...perhaps the mechanic who did the post sale tuneup, was not well versed in the nuances of ihc and possibly installed the wrong cap/dust cover combination onto the distributor, creating alignment/clearance issues between the cap contacts and the rotor.
