I got some more paint on the headers this week. I scuffed them Sunday afternoon, put another coat of primer on and hung them over the stove for the night. Monday, I scuffed the primer, sprayed first coat of jd muffler paint and hung them over the stove.
A friend has an infra-red thermometer he gracoiusly allowed me to borrow. I've been burning this stove for 14 years and never knew how hot it got until last night. As you can see, the ir thermo tells the story!! I shot it at the top of the stove. The vht paint online "instructions" indicate the paint should be cured in stages to 600# f. I'm not sure the headers actually got that hot, but I'm good with where I am. The headers reached about 400# last time I checked. I'd turned the lights out in the shop, too dark for a photo, but the stove was full.
The last picture is this morning after 2 coats and hanging to "cure" overnight. The jd paint says to allow 36 hrs. Between coats, so I'll scuff and coat tomorrow night.
