72 Scout II Project

I picked up 74 a week ago and this 72 this weekend. I was hoping to pull it out of the shop and get some better pics but it's either been raining or I've gotten off work past dark. I just can't wait any longer to get started on it so I snapped a few quick pics last night.

This 72 is somewhat unmolested. It had gun racks mounted inside the topper with screws run from the outside so I don't think the top has ever been pulled off. The interior looks to be all original. Not sure if the pto winch is after market or not, I still have a lot to learn about these rigs. The original 345 was pulled after the oil plug was knocked out and burned the engine up so it has no engine currently. It does have homemade lift shackles to accommodate the 33s. Other than that, lots of rust and untouched as far as I can tell. It had been sitting up for about 3 years and was not fun to get out of the hole it was in and up the hill onto my trailer. I ended putting one of the few dents it has on it with a tractor and box blade while pushing it up onto the trailer. Tic'd me off but, what do you do. Looking at setting up a winch on my trailer now, lol.
Forgive the multiple posts. It's the only way I can get pics loaded up on here from my phone. 1 pic per post or it errors out. Also, ignore all the junk piled up in my shop please. I'm working on remedying that now. In-laws and such decided my shop was for their personal storage. I've told them it's time to move out! Lol

Forgot to mention, in the top photo the hood is missing but the po still has it. Going to pick it up this weekend. I had already started working on cleaning out the inside when I snapped this pic. It was piled top to bottom with "stuff".

More "stuff". Original interior? The headliner just fell apart. I finished pulling it out last night and unbolted the topper. Took a little leg work but the topper came loose. I'll get some pics of that later.

Cleaning out the inside was almost like a treasure hunt! That green thing is some kind of insulated drink dispenser. Possibly military issue, have to research it.

Headliner from rear. Is that dome light original? The wiring seemed factory.

This bumper is rock solid. I'll be adding light guards to it and reuse it.

After rethinking it, this pto winch probably isn't stock. I remember looking at the tc disengage and thinking it's definitely homemade and after market.

The only other after market work I've found on this beast. The front shackles.

And just for the heck of it, a close up of driver side front shackle, lol.

Dome light is original. I have the same in el pimpkin. The winch actually looks original. And the shackles look like a kit you get from any autopart store.

Looks like you're gonna have run with her

Thanks for the info ihr! I might be selling the fiberglass topper liners and dome light. I'm debating on do something different with the topper, and yeah, it's looking like the 72 has lots of cancer.

Hey ed, thanks! Yeah, they're buckshots. P78 r15s and they're toast. Dry rotted, treads are seperating but, they still hold air. May be fun just to tool around the yard with them when I get this beast running again. She'll end up wearing a set of BFG ata 33s.

I'm going to do my best to save her but I keep finding lots of really bad rust everytime I peek around another corner. I'll post more pics up this weekend. Pulled the passenger front fender off last night and found 2 sizeable bondo patches! Who ever did it really did a good job but, I never have understood why people use bondo for a big spot. Especially on a steel vehicle! Oh well, it'll come off and a real repair will be made.

Exterior body appears to be fairly solid from the looks of the photos. Those shackles are definately a po virus home made cheap version of a whimpy shackle lift with an added twist of a tie in plate welded to both front shackles

I definately have one spare pair of shackles sitting here on the bench that came off my 73 beast. Took them off in favor of the shackle reversal kit install which comes with it's own shackles in the kit. The second pair(which are similar to the past photo I had posted in your other thread) that I have sitting here on the bench next to my own spare set, came of a friend's 69 Scout 800 that has narrower springs. I just checked this morning, and there is a 1/4" difference in width between the two pairs. The 2nd pair barely fits the Scout II leafs with no clearance for the spring bushings.

Just an update. Haven't had a lot of time to work on my scouts lately but, I've done a few little things. I started tearing out the dash and such on the 72. Robbed a few pieces to put on my 74 for now (door panels and some switches). Not much to see really but, I'll snap a few pics if there's any desire to see the minimal progress, lol.

Tha hell you mean if theres any desire? Damn skippy theres desire. We love photos here. Any progress is progress comrade. :icon_eh2: but only if theres no mouse crap in the pictures. Ive had a rough time with scouts and mouse crap so I get skiddish around it
