72 Scout - How to determine the axles on the vehicles

Good Day,

I'm wanting to determine the axles on the truck I got, Are they stamped with a code, Got a tag, Differential bolt pattern?

Thanks for the assistance.
Sam

The standard axles for that year are Dana 30 front and Dana 44 rear with drum brakes all around and a 5 on 5.5" wheel lug pattern. That's if no one pulled any swaps prior to your ownership. If the little tin tag is still retained by one of the diff cover bolts and is undamaged, it will tell you the axle gear ratio. A lot of times those tags are either long gone or too badly damaged to be legible. You can get a rough estimate of the ratio by getting both wheels off the ground. Make a reference mark on the drive shaft and a reference mark on a tire. Then rotate the tire and count how many drive shaft rotations there are in one tire rotation. A pinch over three shaft turns would be 3.07 to 1. The only way to be exact in the absence of a legible tag is to pull the diff cover and look at the numbers stamped into the ring gear.
