72 Scout 304 Valve Cover PVC Question

Good Day,

The Drivers side Valve Cover has a threaded hole that has a cleanable PVC valve that use to be vented thru the original air cleaner. I've since replaced the original with a K & N filter & cover which does have the connections.

My question is 2 fold, does anyone know where I can get a threaded Cleanable PVC valve or do they make a threaded tube I could install with a air breather?

The PCV valve actually goes to the manifold/carburetor base. It works off of manifold vacuum to draw the crankcase vapors.

What you might be describing is the flame arrestor for the make-up air from the carburetor's air filter.

I would just put a short pipe nipple in the hole and run a PCV rated hose from it to the air cleaner. There are adapter nipples such as barbed hose to NPT threads (that can be male for female) to make your installation look good and leak free and still use a flame arrestor for safety. I have looked for threaded PCV valves and flame arrestors, and the pick'ins are pretty slim if not just dumb luck to find them these days.

Just an opinion here, but I think the stock air cleaner, or similar dry element, will provide cleaner air and better service than a media that needs frequent oiling.

Thank You for replying. I believe you are right that it is in fact a Flame Arrestor. Since I no longer use the original air cleaner housing I really don't have anywhere to run a hose. Would it be acceptable to attach an air breather to a threaded NPT nipple or would it be better to just install a threaded plug and block off the hole completely.

Attach an air breather to a threaded nipple. You don't want to close it off as the engine needs that opening for proper crankcase ventilation.
 
That'll give you what is called and "open" PCV system. I preferred a "closed" system that has the breather going to the carb. I did the K&N stuff years ago. Here I put a fitting in the bottom filter plate inboard of the filter.

The carb draws the vapors under heavy loads, so there's no residue getting on the engine. Makes for less pollution. The fitting was a 1/4" male NPT X 1/2 or 3/8" hose fitting. I cut the threads short so it didn't stick out too much, then secured it with a brass jam nut. Sometimes you can find these fittings called "bulkhead" fittings. That is they're made to attach to thin walled or sheet metal housing such as an industrial gauge panel. Anyway. A touch of RightStuff to seal it and it took me about 45 minutes.
