Ive been building my truck for about a year, its my first Scout and my favorite vehicle, well I just installed new stock carb with manual choke, new started and new alternator, then I found all the engine wiring was burned up, so after re running the wires one by one so I didnt get them mixed up I tried starting my truck, the motor turns toward driver side of truck, my Dad told me thats wrong, if anyone could help me with some insight to what it might be I would greatly appreciate it, and I am going to have a few more questions for you guys later in my project, thanks

Well thanks anyway guys I figured it out, I hooked up a battery to the truck and I earlier ran a toggle switch to the starter because the ignition wasnt working, and it ran great for about 30 seconds or so and then my fucking motor siezed up, so now im interested in buying a new Scout this one has pissed me off to many times

if your interested in my Scout ide sell it for around 2000, has lots of brand fucking new parts never been droven since I baught it like the brake booster tires and rims carb starter alternator roll bar coil,

if you have any scouts for sale im interested im willing to spend 4 1/2 - 5k must be lifted and ready to go preferably sprung over 345 power steering, pm me for more details im in lodi CA

:yikes: reminds me of myself at times.

Helps to take a brake from the project for a week or two. The motor May have been on it's way out before you even tried to start it. Having fried wiring would have been the first indication of something suspiciously wrong with sumfin. Why was the wire burnt up in the first place? Did you even try doing the pre-oiling recommendations before you cranked over the motor? Haste makes waste.

Btw - welcome to the forum

Well thanks scooter, yea the wiring was burned up because the previous owner had the wiring sitting on the passenger side exhaust manifold, im not to sure why is locked up but man im almost 5 thousand dollars into this truck and I need something that runs
I baught this truck and first week the leaf springs literally broke one by one , I replaced the whole suspension with new axels, then I was driving and my tire came flying off ( my mistake I wrecked it and replaced my drum after road rash ) after that my gas tank started to leak (just installed brand new poly gas tank) now this happens
im just that guy that the worst happens to you know? Lol

I been there done that. Good ole case of the "why me?" syndrome. Here's a good read for ya regarding wrenching on these scouts. rules of owning a Scout. There is a lot of good tech info through out this forum and a few others. If ya run into a binde working on your Scout, post up questions. If ya need parts, click on the store link at the top of each and every page here. Guys up IH Parts America are top notch when it comes to customer service and and parts for these ole scouts.

Sorry for your bad luck. It seems to me what you need is a running engine, not a new Scout. You're young. When extreme frustration sets in, rash decisions get made. Like kimball said, you need to let the dust settle for a tick or three. Once your head has cleared, and your emotions are back in check, then you'll be better able to figure out what your next move should be. Besides that, we have a section for classified ads...and this ain't it. That's a joke, but it's also true.
Btw your Dad was wrong about the engine rotation direction. It's clockwise as viewed from the front which would be towards the driver side. The fan blades are cupped in that direction too. For this engine to seize up so quickly, there must have been absolutely no oil pressure. It sounds like you'd been driving it some before this latest incident. How was it running before this? Notice any odd noises or smells? Do you know anything about the recent maintenance history on the engine? Oil and filter changed recently? Correct weight of oil in the crankcase? Oil level at least to the top of the fill line on the dipstick if not a bit above? Reason I ask all these questions is these IH engines are tough as hell and it usually takes some serious effort to kill one that's in running condition. By backtracking and getting some accurate history on this rig, to the degree that its possible, we just might discover what caused this and maybe help avoid a recurrence in the future for you or someone else reading this.

The new gas tank is a clue. Pull the plugs and see if it cranks, I'd bet the cylinders are hydrolocked because they are full of fuel. Are you sure the new tank is vented properly???

Well I'm glad I listened to you guys its was the new starter I didn't think to check the starter, and I have another question on the passenger side of my dash I have a toggle switch going to the large green wire on the alternator, is this a oem switch or did a previous owner install it?

Thanks guys I appreciate it

Glad it was something relatively simple and not catastrophic. The toggle switch you describe is total home brew. The real questions to ponder are: why was it done? What is the purpose? Does leaving it this way increase the risk of an electrical fire? That last one is the one I'd be most concerned about, for obvious reasons.

Well that's my problem I am a novice mechanic this is my first project so I'm stumped on my electrical problem, I replaced alt. Starter an new battery and my charging system still isn't working and on top of that all my bulbs blew out so where would I even start? The switch maybe, and my truck is no. Gold box, and I have yet to see one resistor on the whole truck, were would I install one at because I believe the no resistor is what blew my gauges and the bulbs ( on the flip side my windshield wipers work now haha)

I rewired charging system also the previous owner didn't use firewall clips an the exhaust manifolds melted starter and alt wiring

One more thing, if I wanted to bypass that toggle switch completely where does the green alternator wire run to?

Thanks

That toggle switch should be bypassed. What you're dealing with is the same shit the majority of us have faced at one point or another in our binder experience...shitpiles that have been fooked over in every possible way by some previous owner that shouldn't have been allowed to do anything except turn the key on and off, put the rig in gear and step on the appropriate foot pedals as needed to make the rig move and stop. Nothing special here. My first suggestion to you is move your mouse pointer to the electrical tech heading and click it. Look for the third stickied thread from the top labeled "schematic library". Inside you will see some posts that have pdf file attachments. The very first one is '74-77 electrical system. I know it isn't a '72, but its plenty damn close enough for gummint work. Open that sucker up and study the hell out of it. Its a scan taken right out of the service manual which you really should have your own copy of when you can afford it, but until then, this is the next best thing. In addition to that, I'll explain the basic flow of current for you. Current can actually flow both directions through wires, but that isn't important right now. Everything begins at the battery. Neg side is grounded to the engine block. Pos side runs via a 4ga cable to the large lug on the starter mounted solenoid. There are a couple other wires connected to that point. One is a 10ga wire that travels up to the bulkhead connector where it then enters the cab and travels under the dash to one side of the ammeter (alternator) gauge. There are a number of wires connected to the ammeter gauge as you will see when you study the diagram. One of them is the main feed to the fuse block. Another one is a wire that loops back out to through the bulkhead connector to the alternator. I think this is the one that your lovely po decided to install toggle switch in series with for god only knows why. As you study those diagrams, one other thing that will become evident to you is there is no mention of a toggle switch at any point in the entire run of that wire. A couple more pieces of advice for you to heed: disconnect your battery when you're done messing with things for the day. As screwed up as your wiring sounds, I don't think you should be trusting that your rig won't catch on fire while unattended until you've had a chance to go through it all and give it a clean bill of health. Also, don't leave your key switched to on while the engine isn't running for more than a couple seconds at a time. I don't care what ignition system you have. Very few of them in existence can survive having a constant charge applied for long duration while the engine is stopped.

Thank you, I'm very glad someone thought up the idea of a tech forums, I would be shit out of luck , I will check out the pdf's, have a good one and ill try and keep you guys updated on my p.o.s lol

Ok good news I pulled the switch and ran new wires correctly,
my starter solenoid needs some tlc but it turns over with ignition and some of my lights work, waiting for charge o start it and see if alternator works
should be driving momentarily haha great day

Sweet action. If only the goober ahead of you would have thought to get on the owl gorz interwebz and ask some questions rather than reinvent the wheel...oh well. It gives you some learning opportunities.

Great news after reading through here I cleaned my connectors and my truck runs charges
and sounds great, now it's time to fix interior/gauges and buy some bulbs ( pretty happy day for me )

Yea I am pretty glad lmao I was almost going to give up on this build, we'll now that I have this running I'm going to go pick up these 3 Scout 80/800 I think ones a 61 and the other two are 64 complete projects but I want to build my wife a Scout and my father wants one so its only more experience( btw the guy wants 2500) if I don't buy them ill post te link maybe someone else needs a project

Oh shit! The sumbitch is already fixin' to to have a litter. Aint ya been told? The damn things breed like rabbits on viagra. Good luck!
