71'Travelette Project

I am new to the board, but not internationals. I have a 1970 1210 I rebuilt in 1999, drove it for awhile and has been parked since. My family got larger so now we don't all fit, and I had been looking for a project (Scout). Then decided since I put so much money into the 70 I should just work with that. So I recently bought a 71 travelette. Not sure what the end combo will be, but it is going to be a crew cab short box in the end. Here they are:

Your travelette looks almost exactly like mine when I got it. Same color and camper shell too. Good luck with the project.

Thanks. Finally starting on it. Got the blue one running and started stripping down the t'ette. Bit more rust then expected. :icon_crying:

The travelette cab is about 38" longer. Started some rough measuring to see how short the box will be on my frame. Lots of space before the rear wheel well opening. I gave up on keeping the step side as a short box. I think it would have looked off as the rear box fenders are as long as the entire box would be.

Got some more stripped off today. Lot of needles and crap in the cowl around the vents. Lots of rust, starting to worry the cab is a write off. For how much rust there is everything is coming apart surprisingly easy.

I knew if I waited around long enough the correct picture would surface.

https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/IH...70937906306353

You will need to scroll down a little to see the picture.

I am pretty sure the truck pictured is one of the air force short short box crew cabs.

If you scroll down a little farther you will see a picture of a crew cab with a standard short box.

And the mxt pictured between them also has very little space between the cab and the rear fender.

Those air force trucks are awesome, and I love the lines of those trucks. Too bad I already have too many projects on the go. That is a cool link! Bought some used 37" BFG at's and new aluminum eagle alloys for the old girl. I think it should look pretty good as the truck is going to be blue and black, no chrome.

Progress is slow, but plugging away. Got the box off of old blue, and started on the front end. Did some measuring.
The single cab from frt mount to rear mount was 35".
The travelette cab was 68.5". So a total of 33.5" longer. The holes are all in the frame though, but I will have to move the rear diff back as the hanger is in the holes where the cab mount will go.

Here is a picture of the rear mounted fuel tank. It's from a mid 90's f-150 and fits nicely.

A picture of the box with an orange line showing how short it will be (about 65") when its done.

That 70 is beautiful! Love the blue. There's alot to be said for sibling elbow room :) good luck with the project

Thanks! It is patriot blue pearl. I think it is a 90's dodge colour. Here is it almost as I bought it. This picture I already had done the 4 wheel drive conversion and power steering (sometime in 1997). And the next was after rebuilt it the first time (2000). (sorry scanned the pics and could not figure out how to rotate)

Wow. Amazing progress on your first build. Nice work. I hope mine comes out as well. I May keep patriot blue pearl in mind. I'm gonna be watching your new build for ideas ;)

The project has been neglected but got some time this weekend. Got the canopy off. Compared to new ones what a boat anchor! But well built. Then the box. It came off pretty easy.

Put the box on the back of its new home. There is going to be a lot of shortening going on. Started getting the cab ready to come off as well. The 71 looks so cluttered under the hood...so I have opted not to take the a/c or any of the extra bells and whistles. I am going to keep it simple and plain like mine is now.

The box is sitting back about where it will be when all is done. Here is an engine shot of the clutter.

Well been a bit busy, but finally got some more work done. Yanked the cab off of the travelette.
