I'm doing a frame off restoration of my Scout. I'm down to the frame. Yahoo! Deciding on frame paint & coating.

Several folks I talk to sandblast the frame with suspension/axles/wheels and tires still on and then paint.

I always figured to take these off and get to the frame only for the best job. Is there any reason why people do not disassemble all the way? (common shortcut?) am I being too particular? Would sand get into places you don't want sand?

Give me some opinions...thanks!

I took everything off my frame and blasted it. I etched it with eastwood "afterblast" then primed with nason ful-poxy. It came out great! Then, I taped up most of the holes in the frame and coated the inside with another eastwood product made for that purpose. Just can't remember the name.........
I'm making major mods to mine so the bare frame is the place to start anyway. My $.02 worth!!

Been awhile, and my build is going well thanks to a lot of help.

I'm at the point for wheels and tires.

I have new body mounts, and a 2" lift. I'm considering 32" tires, and new wheels.

Is there anything special I need to consider with the wheels? Is there standoff required on the wheel or does it matter.

I want to be sure I get the full turning radius of the scout and notice the guy before me had bent up the inner fender with heavy lugged tires and turning sharply.

Any info would be appreciated! Never bought wheels before.

Thanks!

Whether you get 15x8 or 15x10, make sure they have no more than 3.75" of backspacing. Backspacing in excess of 3.75" will cause the inner sidewall of the tire to rub the tierod ends. Once you buy and install your tires you can adjust the axle turn stops to keep the tire from rubbing the leafsprings at full turn.

What rim size came std with 71 Scout 2? 15 inch x ? width.

Either 6" or 7" with an 8" option. Your Line Set Ticket would say what wheels it came with. From there we cross reference in the parts book to see what width that particular wheel is.

Line setting ticket says:

5 Stud Disc Frt Whls 885209651D

5 stud disc sgl rr whl 925209650

I'd like to run 32 inch tires on these rims. Is that possible? Any recommendations?

The look I'm going for would be black rims, stock hubcaps (which I have) and 32" tires....bigger than normal to match up with my 2" lift.

Those should be 6" wide wheels. Going to be a little narrow for a 11.50 wide tire but might fit a 10.50 wide.

Can anyone tell me if these are the original IH hubcaps for my 71 Scout 2. Ive had them since I bought the scout from a guy in 87.

Now that I'm restoring, before I go to wheels, I wanted to know if these are original.

In my 71 Scout 2 rebuild, I've recently completed it 95%, and began driving it. I did a frame off restoration, 2" lift, new springs, and new body mounts and 32" tires. All which gave a great new lifted height.

I think I read that a 2" lift should not require any steering adjustments/modifications, nor front axle "wedges" to adjust the angle.

I reused all the stock steering components. The steering does "wander" and takes a bit of getting used to. Seems like the linkages are all pretty tight. Rod ends are not loose. Are there any recommendations to improve the steering response. (so many products out there, need some guidance).

Thanks!

All except 1980 Scouts have 0 factory caster, probably to make them turn easier off road. I think of caster as a setting that causes the Scouts front end to actually lift a little when the steering is turned anywhere but straight, which causes it to want to drop back down and go straight when you stop turning, or are going straight down the highway. I would definitely install the 2 degree caster shims (thick part of the wedges to the front) before trying anything else, unless you find something like a steering box with excessive play in it. Also check your rag joint, the Borgeson replacement units are a definite improvement there. If you drove it before modifying it, it probably had the same issue - very little to do with the lift or bigger tires.
