71 Scout Tire's

I have a 1971 Scout 800B, and would like to know if my b.f. Goodrich a/t 285-70r-17 will work on the Scout. I have been told this will damage front-end parts (tie rods, ect) or could have a tire snap off going around corners. Thank you, twinscreek.

Your tires are about a 33x11.5 - which is just a bit too big for your front Dana 30 axle. But if you stick to the street and/or think when you drive off road and keep your bearings/ujoints maintained you would probably be fine. If you drove a Jeep (with the same Dana 30 front end) everyone would be telling you "toss some 33's on that thing and get wheeling...."

Chris, thank you for your help. I am debating to sell the 285's and getting a set of 255's and 16" wheels. My 71 will be mostly on street and gravel roads. Steve m.

I'm running 265's on 16" rims on the Scout and am really happy with them. In fact it's on it's second set. The stock 10.5x31's would through mud up the side of the truck and even onto the hood. These keep the mud line below the belt/door trim. I drive dirt roads to get to my house so it makes the Scout much cleaner during the winter.

Thank you fdchappie, did you stay with 70's for tire height? I don't plan on turning sharp corners at 60 mph, but then again I would like as much - safe height - for ground clearance without rolling. Twinscreek.
