700R4 Questions

Need some help here from the forum. It has to do with the transplanted 700r4....

-which port (top or bottom) is the hot fluid output?
-which port on the radiator cooler (top or bottom) is best to run the hot fluid?
-on a spin-on canister filter (I have an outboard aftermarket unit), which port is the input? Is the filter (regular spin-on oil filter) designed to take pressure from the middle and force it out through the filter, or just the opposite?
-finally, do you think there is any problem with the extra fluid volume of a filter/external cooler/extra lines draining back to the pan after extended periods (weeks to months) of inactivity? The trans should just pump it through the system after start-up right?

Let this be a lesson to all those that want to go down this path. The tf727 has its cooling lines on the other side of the case compared to the GM trans. I should have noted which line was doing what before I junked them.

So now I'm beginning to bend up new lines, but I am stumped on these first few questions. Thanks to all that can help!

Yep, that gets me going. Thanks mm. Still wondering about in/out of spin-on filters (I.e. Transdapt). If anyone has that knowledge, it would be appreciated too.

Go here for trans dapt remote filter instructions instructions:

"drainback" of the filter system should not be a problem, but I would not use a "ph8" fram filter as recommended. Use an equivalent wix, hastings, or purolator pure one, much higher quality filter media and much more "capacity. By the way, that is the same filter cartridge used for any screw-on ihc I-4 or sv engine application. There is some "solvent" action associated with atf and that can react with the resins used in some filtration media.

If some drainback occurs due to the filter location, so what...won't hurt nuthin' at all. The torque converters drain back also to a degree.

Cross flow radiators that include a transmission heat exchanger (not all do) are plumbed with the out (hot) fluid into the top fitting and the bottom fitting is the return line to the transmission.

Copy on the fram stuff. An autozone sales guy (go figure) warned me a couple years ago about a de-lam condition he had heard about when using delo truck oil. He was an older guy and seemed to be "in the know." since then, I have heard nothing but doom and gloom with fram stuff no matter which oil you used. Bought a wix that day, and have been using baldwin equiv. (b2 from grainger) ever since.
Also good info on the radiator hook-ups. I was afraid of the "50-50-90" rule. (if something can go either way, you'll pick the wrong way 90% of the time....)
and on the spin-on filter....
I welded in a bung for a temp sender between the two ports. In the process, the "in" and "out" cast letters were erased. Unfortunately, the transdapt site did not help. I need a pic, or drawing that shows which is which.
Thanks again. I appreciate the honest, no bs advice you get around here!

A picture's worth a thousand words...
On a good day, my aluminum skills are passable....but on cast material, things unravel fast. I saved it as best I could. It still May be a sprinkler under load...

The oil filter flows from the outside in. There is a anti-drainback valve visible through the slots/holes around the perimiter, that will prevent or at least seriously restrict flow.

In the pic is worth a thousand words theme here is a little comparo between the fram ph8a and what I use the motorcraft fl-1a.

Wow...fram, that's a joke. Marketing at the sake of quality.
And for the record, I was going to use the outside port as my "in." 10% shows up in the weirdest places. Thanks for the verification, eric.
