'70 Scout 800A

I just bought a Scout 800A with a 196 and 3 speed. The 196 is not running, I think the cam/cam bearings are wiped out and a few of the push rods are probably bent.

The body and frame are in great shape, interior is good too.

The plan is for an engine swap. I was thinking a 345 or 304, but the more I think about it I am thinking maybe a 4.3 or 6.0. This won't be off road much, it will be a fun vehicle for the family to ride in. I'd probably also go with an auto so others can drive it. I have a 74 FJ40 w/350 and 4spd on 33's that is in good shape. Not much room for the kids and dog. I'll keep it, but the Scout will be a nice weekend vehicle.

What's your thoughts on the 4.3 vs. the 6.0?

I will probably go hydroboost and disc front brakes. If I go 6.0 I'd probably go Scout II D44's front and rear. Might do them anyway, probably cheaper finder a scout II D44 front then a disc swap for the D27.

Do the Scout II's spring width match or do I need to weld new perches on?

Thinking maybe doing an SOA on stock springs, or going to Scout II springs since they are wider and would ride better. If I do that I would probably do a shackle reversal. I did that with a CJ7 I had when went SOA I tossed on YJ springs (wider) and it rode like a caddy.

I'd like to have a solid plan up front so I don't waste money changing as I build it.

Thanks.
J

I am still torn about putting something in it other than IH. I did a little research and if I don't go with a 345 I may just fix the 4cyl for now. If I go non-IH I am thinking the 5.3l LS with 4l60e at this point. It seems like $4-5k for a swap when the engine only costs $1k based on others experience. Running a 345 looks a lot better than spending $5k and a lot of time doing the swap.
