70 SCOUT 800A

My dad owns a 1970 International Scout 800A that he’s owned since it was new and he’s attempting to put back together and get it back on the road. He’s not into computers or any sort of tech (he can barely figure out how to use his cell phone) so I’m trying to help him as best as I can being 2 states away. I can turn wrenches and have for many years, but since I’m not too familiar with Scouts, I’m reaching out to you guys for help.
My dad is needing to replace his fuel pump and come to find out the fuel pump also contains some sort of vacuum system that is responsible for the function of the windshield wipers. The problem is this fuel pump are over $500 if you can find one. So the question we have is can we eliminate the fuel pump as a source of vacuum and connect the vacuum line from the wipers to a port on the intake manifold. Logic tells me it would work fine, but since I’m not familiar with this type of system, I need your help with this. Seems like it would be a simple solution. Has anyone done this with your Scout? If we can figure out a different vacuum source for the wipers, then he could purchase a simple fuel pump that will only cost around $65 instead of over $500. Thanks for you help…
