66 scout 800 upgrade

Hi guys
I have just picked up a 66 Scout 800 and found it needs a new engine and gear box... It has a Dana 20 twin stick transfer case but thats all the info I have at the moment as I haven't had time to have a good look over it yet... I have a chev 383 with a turbo 400 just been built.. What I am wondering is if the transfer case will work with the new drive train or would I be better off finding a new transfer case as well?(sorry to the Scout purists)

Nope. The transfer case in scouts are IH specific. Only exception is if some po did some modifications.

Is the Chevy transmission(and motor) out of a 4x4? If so then source out a transfer case from the same era. That will bolt up to the trans.

Advance adapters will have what you need. Jeff sells them here: adapters - International Scout parts. You will need to call him to get the correct one for what you are doing. It is not cheap but since you already have the engine/tranny and t case it is a good way to go. I am doing the same thing but it is a Chevy 350/4l60e and Jeep Dana 300 t case. I went with a novak adapter as I liked their kit better, but they both make quality products.
Like scooter mentioned, is it out of a 4x4 or 2wd? My 4l60e came out of an impala but it was a k case so I just had the tail shaft switched out to a 4x4 model. Not sure about the th400. I think aa does make an adapter for the 2wd transmissions though. Do a little searching, there is a ton of info on the web.

Cheers for the advice so would I be better of finding a different transfer case to suit the th400 and get it all set up that way. Im in australia so not to sure on where to find parts because there dont seem to be to many scouts around.. Im just worried about how much I have to change around to make it all fit

What ever transfer case you go with, if you use the Chevy engine and tranny you are looking at new motor mounts, a new cross member, new drive shafts, new radiator, etc. If you are willing to take that on I would not let the transfer case drive your decisions. At the point you decide to change running gear you open yourself up to unlimited options.

I don't know anything about the company you mentioned.
The Dana 20 is a good transfer case, if I had it to do over again I would have used my d20 rather than buying a Jeep Dana 300. The Scout d20 is inexpensive and readily available. There are even terra low kits for them. They just have the IH bolt pattern rather than the more common circular Jeep pattern.
Being in australia May also weigh on what you decide by what is available to you.

50-1401 : GM th400 automatice transmission to Scout Dana 20 / Scout Dana 300 transfer case (with 23 spline drive gear), adapter kit. | advance adapters

I can only give you info from my experience. I'm sure others will comment on what they have experienced while doing their builds.

The old mans Scout I found in the hay shed, he passed away 15 years ago and hasn't been moved since.

It does start and it does run but has a very leaky engine and the cooling system is shot so im thinking it will be getting an upgrade.

I have a chev 383 engine and a turbo 400 tranny built to go in a holden wb (being in australia) so should work with an adapter to the Dana 20

im open to suggestions on what parts to use or other ideas.
Im picking it up once wheat harvest is done (around Christmas)

Thanks for the advice mate ill have to look into the terra low kit cause I May as well rebuild the tc as well then I shouldnt have to worry to much about it once its together

Similar to what you want to do. Jeff and the guys do really nice work, and they can source most parts you could want.

Just looked at your pictures.

Since your Scout is not a v8 you are going to have to deal with the front frame cross member and radiator support. The link I posted shows how they dealt with the same situation.

This guy did it another way:

Both also dealt with the steering in different ways.

Lots of options.
