4x4 instructions

I am looking for the proper instructions or process to put my rig in 4 wheel drive and take it out. It is a 1980 sii, with an automic 304. I have had jeeps in the past and a tahoe now - completely different set ups.

I can assume I lock the hubs, put it in neutral and then put it in 4x4 high or low. I can remember my Dad had an old rig and him putting it in reverse to disengage it.

Can anyone give me some insight to doing this correctly?

The method you've described is fine for lo range engagement. In addition to that method, hi range is actually meant to be engaged/disengaged on the fly. Getting out of 4lo with the auto trans is a bit trickier. It requires both hands and foot on the brake. Left hand on the gear selector going slowly through the p-r-n positions and back with right hand on the t-case lever applying pulling pressure. You May experience grinding when going from t-case n position back to 2hi. Shutting off the engine momentarily will allow you to pop the lever into 2hi position without gear grind.
