4 cyl automatic?

I have a 1977 Scout II, stock 196, Dana 44 front and rear, 4.11 gears. Pretty much stock in that it has a 3 speed stick and a chain transfer case (single speed)

question: will a 727 tf bolt right up? Is the bell housing different for a 4 cyl? What are my options here? Was going to do a close ratio 4 speed, but if the 727 and d20 tc fits, why not? I guess the other questions would be: linkage for the carb? The torque converter?

Any ideas? Has anyone done this before? And if so, how does the conversion make sense?

Thanks in advance.

The sii 4 cylinder bell bolt pattern is the same as the sv8. For the tf 727, you'd also need a 4 cylinder flexplate, the auto trans equivalent of a flywheel. I don't know if there was a stall speed difference or any other attribute that would require something unique in terms of a torque converter. Then you need an auto bull gear to match whichever t-case is mated to it. Also need an external trans oil cooler and the associated plumbing between it and the trans. A Scout II auto floor shifter and cable would take care of the gear selecting. A lokar setup could be used to control the throttle valve pressure for proper up and down shifting.
Far easier would be to stick with a stick since you're already set up that way. I guess it comes down to what you're trying to achieve. Are you just wanting another gear to grab? Tired of pumping the clutch pedal? Looking to get a little further off the beaten path?
