304 to 345 Swap

I bought another Scout II with a dead 304 and wondering if the 345 will just drop in and go? I have the carb and dist. And everything with the 345. Motor mounts the same and bell housing on 727 same? Thanks for your time.

The only thing I can think of is the exhaust down pipes. The 304 is a "lower" deck height (slightly) as compared to the 345...so ya May have to slack off the exhaust hangers to facilitate the pipe connections.

Depending upon the year model engines/chassis involved, there May be some very minor finagling with various throttle and wiring connections but no big deal.

Engine mounts, tranny bellhousing, etc. Is all the same.

And of course everything depends on how severe the po virus affected both the recipient vehicle and the donor motor!

Thanks michael, as always you came threw. I tell people about yours and others knowledge on IH's and this web page all the time. Thanks again.

If the donor engine was not in a Scout you will need to swap oil pans and get a different oil pump and pickup.

The 345 is from a 72 II and its going into a 75 II. So it sound like it should be an uneventful swap. Cross my fingers.

Good point,

we dropped a 345 from a 79 Scout into our 74 loadstar, everything fit perfect, the only mods needed was the swappage of the electronic distributor.

We didnt change the oil pan and pump, everything works fine.

Good luck with your swap, its alot easier than one would think.

Yep...a loadstar has plenty of space adjacent to the top of the front axle to be able to run any oil pan/pump set. Not so on a Scout II...thus the double hump oil pan and rear/extended pickup used in Scout II platform applications of the sv engine series.

An sii platform with oem suspension and front axle must use a double hump pan or a collision will occur when the front suspension compresses. An sii that has been converted to a spring-over front suspension has enough space to allow the use of the front sump pan as used on fullsize rigs as wells as medium duty and school bus platforms.

Yeah, the 345 has tons of extra room in the loadstar. It dropped in on the first try.
